Hello:

I am considering a small boat with a 20HP 1988 Mariner (electric start). I am somewhat familiar with Mercury outboards, but I have no experience or knowledge of the Mariner motors, ecept that they are owned by Mercury. What is the quality of the Mariner motors compared to the Mercury line? Anything I should especially check on a Mariner of that vintage? I suspect that the motor sat for two years without running. How big of a deal is a carb rebuild on that motor?

Thanks,
Terry

Re: Mercury vs. Mariner

Its a yamaha based mariner you got. I got a 88' 30hp. all in all they are pretty good motors though. Just like any motor, if you take care of it it'll take care of you. Carb rebuilds arent too bad. If its just like mine its pretty easy. Might also wanna do an impeller rebuild and a gear lube change if its been sittin for a while.
