A friend of mine was just up at Canada and a big storm hit leaving his 40 hp Mercury submerged for 3 hours til he could get it out. Here's what he did, got it out of the water and took the plug out and turned it over, spraying the water out of the cylinders. Said he wiped it off, drained the fuel from the tank, installed new and it started fairly easy with a shot of starting fluid. He then ran it on the lake for about 45 minutes and said it worked great. THEN al at once it just died and wouldn't start. Now there's no spark. First of all it's a 1982 and does that have points or power pack? Could something have shorted out? Maybe if he removes the flywheel and spray everything down with WD-40to aid in removing the moisture. I don't know, never had this happen but I did tell him he should've oiled the cylinders good and he removed the water. NOW WHAT?

The bearings in the motor also are probably contaminated. It is hard to heat the motor enough to drive the moisture out of the bearings, so he will have corrosion there regardless of the spark problem. A teardown is probably needed.

As to the electrical, problem, it could be a lot of things. His service manual should outline the steps to figure out where the electrical failure is.

Final thought, if he has insurance, and it is storm related, he is probably covered, less his deductable.

fp

The 1982 is a "Coilpack" motor, with no dizzy. There are clear procedures in the manual for a submerged motor. Was is salt or fresh ??
If salt, it will most likely need to be stripped and cleaned.

Well it was fresh water, one good thing. And yeah I saw a post a few weeks ago about the bearings and water. I'll let him know what I found out. The insurance idea is a good one and really doubt if he has a manual, but I might. Have to look for it and give it to'em.

I don't think the insurance would cover this as its not a loss, ie: lost overboard/fell off/stolen.
