Ok I have a 454 mercruiser thunderbolt IV ignition.. I went through the manual on the sticky and checked all the wiring diagrams and everywhere i was supposed to have 12 volts i had it... I checked distributor, ignition coil, solenoid, circuit breaker, starter, and ignition switch.. Is there anything i am missing?? The reason i post this question is b/c when i turn the key nothing happens... I can turn the starter over touching the two post but nothing at the switch.. any ideas of what i might be missing... and on the 454 left hand rotation i know the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2...is the number 1 piston if you are facing the motor "looking at the pulleys" on the left or the right

Here is the picture from any V8 Merc manual. Not sure which manual you have, but here is the picture from #16

I will check out the trouble shooting guide... My ignition switch is not on my shifter it is on the dash... shifter is off to the side so i dont think it should matter... as far as kill switch i am not sure

It matters there is a neutral safety switch in the throttle if it is not in neutral you get no spark no nothing same with the kill switch.

Just jiggle it to make sure it's fully in neutral.

Somehow missed that sentence in you original post.

Why are you checking spark and ignition systems when you have a cranking problem?
Go to the link Chiefalen posted http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167035 and follow it. If you have the wiring harness from the helm connected, it doesn't matter if you have the cables hooked up or not. Go through the troublshooting process. It's necessary.

So where are the wires that go to the throttle?

none of them are hooked up... this is a motor i am doing for the first time so i do not have all that hooked up... I had the throttle temporarily hooked up and only had trim and tilt wires hooked up... I do have two yellow and red wires that are coming from the shifter and two coming from the boat i assume those are the wires you are talking about.. should i connect them and manually shift the cables in neutral
Why are you checking spark and ignition systems when you have a cranking problem?
b/c i just hooked all that up today also.. I figured i would add that in that it had been checked

Look at my picture again.

Think about the word FRONT at the top of the picture.

Whaa?????
The neutral safety switch... or NSS.... goes inline with the start wire off of the keyswitch... and that's it.
The kill switch... or Emergency stop switch... or ESS grounds out your coil.

Re: merecruiser ignition ?

I wasn't going to post here again, but now i must.

1- I didn't know the wires were off everything.

2- I was trying to cover Don s back. I saw he missed something and just wanted to post the troubleshooting guide and a quick fix maybe.

3- Read where he says he got nothing when he hit the key, and there was nothing. ( READ THE FIRST POST ) He states the reason for his post.

4- Would that suggest at that point and time, that maybe, the kill switch was out, or, the throttle was not in neutral, and if jiggled would give him power.
If we were given the info that everything was in disarray and no wires hooked anywhere then we would have given more precise info to help.

I ask here in the open forum was i so wrong in what i posted?

Davis He was trying to help you. No reason for that last post, and your were wrong. Plus he doesn't need me to defend him, he can handle himself quite nicely.
