Hey guys I just want to thank you in advance for your help. OK here is my situation, my motor was running just great the other day and all of a sudden I was cruising about 3/4 speed when it started bogging down. When it finally stalled I tried to start it again and it just clicked like I had a dead battery. upon inspecting my batteries(optima blue top) and (megatron deep cycle) the terminals of my batteries were extremly hot to the touch. I disconnected my accesory battery (megatron) and hooked up just my blue top and everything worked fine and I got back into my dock. I took out both batteries and brought them to autozone and they both showed good but they were drained quite a bit. I went back to the boat and hooked up just the blue top and hooked up my volt meter with the engine running and it read charging which was good, now when I wired in the other battery neither of them were reading as charging with the motor running but just 12 volts. I believe the batteries are wired in parellell on a 1,2,both battery switch. should they be wired in series because the switch doesnt appear to be working properly. even with the batteries off some stuff stilll works and on battery 1 on the switch everything works as well as on battery 2 everything works so I dont get it. I did not wire this up some other guy did but I think I should have. Does anyone have a diagram of the proper way this should be wired? if not a description will do just fine. Thanks a ton guys for the help.
James

Re: merury problems

Setup:
-From the positive terminals of the batteries connect to terminals #1 and #2 of the battery switch. The common terminal on the battery switch is where you connect the leads from your starting solenoid and electronic accessories (i.e. all hot). Then connect a wire between the negative terminals of the battery. Then connect a wire from one of the negative terminals on either battery, really choose at free will, and connect that to the ground on your starting motor.

First of all don't wire in series as this will double the voltage, not what you want!! You have 2 types of battery & that's fine but they should have different things wired to them. One should be a starting battery, & one should run most everything else, all electronics should be off in the off position, except an auto bilge pump, if the boat stays in the water. Disconnect the batteries & check the switch w/ an ohm meter if you suspect it is bad. You can get a diagram from most manufacturers, such as Perko, or Guest. A handy book to have is the 12 volt bible, or look in the library for a similar book to use for the time being. Basicly battery 1 goes to the 1 position on the switch, battery 2 goes to the 2 position on the switch, the negitives on both batteries go to a bus (ground strip) under the dash, & a connection from the switch to the fuse box also under the dash. I hope this helps, but there are variations of this for different boats, for different applications. Good Luck, Joe

Re: merury problems

As Andy said (& I Forgot) the both terminal goes to the starter or starter relay.

Re: merury problems

ok great thanks. :) Ok now I have a new problem lol. My motor runs fine when in neutral at all rpm's but when I put it into gear and try to punch it the boat does not get up on plane and the motor bogges down and it dies. Any one have any idea's?

Re: merury problems

Sounds like you need to clean your carbs. I was having the same problem. So i cleaned them this weekend. Now the boat screws.

When cleaning, get yourself some of the carb cleaner they sell by the gallon (say from Napa), not the spray stuff. Disassemble the carbs and soak (fully submerged) them for 3-5 minutes in the cleaner. Then give a quick rinse under water and then finally get an air compressor and air dry them. You must get rid of all the carb cleaner and water. You will also need to get a new set of gaskets. I paid ~ $7 per carb. Good luck

-andy

Re: merury problems

ok thanks I appreciate it:) one more question. I have checked the spark in all 6 cyl and it is good, if the engine is running and I cover up the top carb the motor stall's out. If I cover the second the motor stalls out, if I cover the third it doesnt it boggs a tiny bit while holding my hand over it then when I release it the motor revs up a little then back down. Could I have a bad spark plug on the 6 cylinder?
