Well now I have to replace lower, hit rock today, wasn't hard enough to damage upper unit and was able to get back to boat dock and load her up, but cracked housing(leaking oil), curled the prop, and cracked off the fin.
Mercruiser Alpha one, #OD461783 / 1:84 right
Do lower units come fully assembled?

How difficult is it to drop the lower unit completely and slide the new one on, and hopefully it will have a new impeller too:)

not too hard to do. but certainly a 2 people job. puting it back will cause cussing and multiple attempts till ya get it. but for sure is doable. easier with a s/m though. gives reassurance that yer doing it proper. basically, ya put everything in fwd. maybe unhook yer speedo if ya got one on the lower. and remove the trim tab. and then 6 bolts/nuts/capscrews and off she comes..

just a guess. but i would think the new sei lower that bd is talking of would have a new water pump impeller and housing since that's a part of the lower and sei is selling ya a new lower.. here's where ya can get info on them or buy them. http://www.sterndrive.cc/

iboats has them too.. http://www.boatmotors.com/?*******=847112527&**********=913281618

I do it myself with the help of a jack. I think if you turn the prop the oposite way than you think you are supose 2 is the correct way. Turn the prop, lift the jack slow and it should pop in. This did take many of a time and alot of swearing berore i got it down.

you might as well pull the whole drive and make it easier to change the lower and take a good look at the transom assembly, bellows, ujoints, etc... while you're doing a major service / repair. I do pretty much everything without a spare set of hands and it's just easier for me to split the drive housings and get them back together right with it off the boat...
