Metal deterioration problem

I have a mid 80s 8hp johnson compression bad no start I removed head and had a look the metal is deteriorated on the outside of the steel sleeve of one of the cylinders almost completely gone.Heres my question will a new head gasket make a seal just on top of the steel sleeve. Thanks for any info.

Maybe, but probably not for long.

You have high gas pressures on one side, and water pressure on the other, and not much area for that poor gasket to seal to.
Got any pictures? We love pictures...

Bet it's a salt water motor, right? Pretty common ailment. And some will tell you that salt water won't hurt them. Yeah, right. Fresh water will do it too, just takes longer. Hey, you got over 20 years out of it. That ain't bad---more than I'd expect for salt water.

Yes it is salt water motor the aluminum is poped right off the side of the sleeve Sorry no pictures are available of it.
