I just painted my boat with the first goat, The question I have is this. After I put thr final coat on and it dries ? Can I mix some metal flake with some clear coat and spray the boat with it. To get a metal flake look.

Thanks Buda

Hmmm, didn't know you could paint a boat with a goat!:D:eek:

Seriously though, We need a bit more info. What kind of Primer did you use. What kind of Color finish paint did you use? Are you wanting the Large Flake or the Smaller "Sparkle" kind? What kind of equipment are you using? Pics would also help us to help you.

Yup..sure can do m8.

It will look like crap .. but yes.

You would probably want to spray a few coats of just clear over it .. but sure..

Put flake or pearlessance in your first clear then clear and clear..and clear coat it ..

Still gonna look like crap... not the depth to it that you might be thinking.. but it will sparkle ..

Have fun and keep us posted with some pics :) ..

Another thing to think about.

The final look will depend a great deal on your spray gun and technique, the slightest change gun angle, distance, pressure, speed, etc, can change the look and you may end up with sort of a blotchy finish, so practice first.

Re: Metal Flake

Had to jump in here and recommend against this...

While anything is possible, this isn't the way to get the look you are after and as has already been said, it ain't gonna look right...

Even if you practice on a piece of whatever, if it isn't the same size as the boat, and you do it exactly the same way, in exactly the same conditions [ I recommend a professional automotive type spray booth]...everytime...it won't look right...

Unless you are an ACE with a spray gun, have tons of practice doing this type of painting, and all the conditions are perfect...you are going to waste a lot of time, energy, material and money...

However, all that being said, it's your wallet, your time and your boat...you can do whatever you want...and in the end you might get lucky and make me eat my words...[I usually put some garlic on them, just in case...:D]

Best of Luck,

No..your right..Luck and metallic does not mix together very well :) ..

One other word of advice .. If you are using a grav feed or especially a pressure pot .. to NOT release the trigger all the way when the gun is pointed at your surface when spraying metallics or flake !!

Just a friendly helper outer point :D ..

PS. I hope this is not Another hit and run thread...

ooohh a zebra boat.....

seriously, metal flake, pearl, and other effects are a pain in the back side. I am good friends with many autobody techs, each has the agitator in the cup to keep the paint mixed, and they all hate spraying effects in clear. one sneeze, and you have to sand-down and re-start. if your gun and technique are not perfect, you end up with zebra stripes.

Re: Metal Flake

My auto body tech days are long gone but....

I love metal flake. It reminds me of the bumper cars at amusement parks and a lake boat my grandfather use to take us out in.

I have an old motorcycle that I wanted a green flake paint job on --just the tank. I found some green flake rattlecan paint and commenced to spraying. I then sanded and clear coated--about 5 times. Simply didnt have the flake flash that I was looking for.

I found some spray gold sparkle stuff in a can from a local arts and crafts place on clearance and decided to experiment. I sanded the tank down to the green flake and sprayed on the gold sparkle-- just a touch. I then sanded and clear coated again--many times. It took me about a month to get it looking right. I cant imagine doing a whole boat. Maybe a stripe of flake down the side or something....

That motorcycle tank went on my bike--81 yam xs650 thats been updated with some modern parts. Unfortunately, the first time I spilled a bit of gas on the tank the clear smeared. All that time...gone....never again.
