Metal in my A1G2 when i separated lower unit

I just got the boat, its a project, today I took on the project of replacing the impeller, and when i tried to remove the lower unit and as per picture, there is a lot of metal on the inside. Where do I go with this now?

if you mean cast iron bits and pieces , it`s normal

I had my roommate take a look, he thinks it's dirt or sand, if not then cast iron. First time working on an outdrive, is there something I can do to check and make sure it's okay, I worked on car engines a lot and as soon as I saw what looked to be metal I panicked

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... A magnet will tell ya if it's iron,......

That whole cavity is Wet, so there tends to be sand, 'n crap gettin' into it,.....

Depends on the water ya go boatin' in,....

Time to get the real life Mercruiser Manual for that drive and motor. Then do every bit of maintenance. Have to assume the new to you boat was an old and neglected boat to the past owner.

Could also be rusted bits of the elbow and manifold innards. And completely normal. As part of the 'maintenance' pull the elbows and check them and the manifold water passages.

Thank you everyone for the replies, I got a manual today, going to order some more parts. When I drained the oil there was no water or metal so I'm hoping it's okay. Going to grab a magnet and test tomorrow. One of my rods for the trim is stuck and was not letting the sterndrive down so I'll be working on that as well

The end cap corrodes and 'grabs' the cylinder rod. The only fix is to replace the end cap.
