I have an old metal gas tank for Johnson motor and it has been sitting for awhile.

What is a good method for cleaning it out and proper disposal of old gas?

Re: Method to Clean Gas Tank

i had an old metal tank that rusted and clogged up my fuel filter really bad. I could not understand why my Mariner 40 would cut out. When I got to checking the fuel line and such I found it. Tons of metal debris floating everywhere. If it where mine I would trash it and get a good plastic tank. This is my opinion for what it is worth. Oh yea, if you decide to keep the tank I think Advance Auto, or some place could use your old gas, if not put it in the mower and cut the grass! Rubbing Alchol will clean old gas out but I would be sure to check for debris floating in your gas. Those metal tanks have a plastic liner that will age and rot over time. Just a thought
Oshi

I'd also consider just buying a new plastic gas tank...

However, if you're set on using your old metal tank...someone in here once suggested it was possible to clean the rust and crud out of a metal gas tank by this method:

Empty tank of old gas.
Add a handful of brass nuts and a quart of clean solvent.
Shake can like crazy.
Drain dirty solvent & remove brass nuts.
Flush well with clean solvent.

I've never tried it, but it sounds as though it might work...

FYI

Walt
