Is methyl hydrate acceptable for use in outboards as a fuel system water remover?
It is verboten in other 2 strokes.

Re: Methyl Hydrate

Gasohol can contain ethanol or methanol (methyl hydrate)and is not recommended for boat motors. Its ability to attract moisture(water) is the problem. Too much moisture and you're boat will stall, stutter, or completely refuse to run. So, unless you would use it all up in a relatively short period of time, it is not recommended.

Other long term concerns are that it can harm rubber seals and diaphrams if the concentrations are too high.

http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/g/gasohol.asp

Re: Methyl Hydrate

On motors where oil is mixed or injected into the gas, alcohol can mess with lubrication. Oil mixes with gas, but not too well with alcohol.

Re: Methyl Hydrate

That is what I thought.
That said, could I use isopropyl alcohol, what is recommended for snowmobiles?
Obviously it differs chemically from methyl hydrate, is isopropyl ok in a 1989 65 Johnny that I mix the gas in?
Sometimes the can sits for long periods in the stern where it is terribly humid and condensation forming and I don’t want to worry.
I have a 2.5 merc kicker that despite having cleaned the carb and fuel tank when I bought it, the carb was full of water and crapped out after a couple of months of sitting in a shed.
Stupid me left the tank half full of stabilized gas.
I also dropped the gas cap in the lake, whilst trying to get it restarted.
The new one has a retainer cord. I guess I’m not the first.
