MFG 1964 restoration/transom work

Just acquired what I believe to be a 1964 MFG. I know it is an Edinboro.
The old registration that came with the bill of sale says 1973..... I will upload pictures.....if anyone has any thoughts or comments, please bring them on. I have been "cruising the forums" and can't wait to get started. I have a very limited budget, so it may be a slow process. I can say, I have already learned an awful lot from the "cruising"

She looks like a 64 to me ! Good windshield and looks like the original steering wheel . I believe you will find that it has all fiberglass deck and stringers . Cool o/b ! Does it run? Not sure if you plan on painting it but you may be able to buff the gellcoat out and it look ok .

I'm not crazy about the color, but I really like cut of the prow. It'll be a real classic when finished.

I hope it turns out as good as some of the others I have seen. There is not a lot of structural damage other than the transom. I have been looking around at lot and Mr Phelps has it pegged. I am not a "glass man" to that extent but I may be a lot of things later that I am not now. A fast learner and much process engineering experience may help though.
This one awesome forum and if I get half the help I have seen others get I believe I will be okay.

Thanks for the reply. I just typed you a huge long reply and it went to cyberspace??? I didn't answer the random question I do believe that to be my problem....SOooooo Basically I fired up the motor shorting the pos wire on the starter over to the battery and it started up. Sounds good and my friend who is a motor guy said he did not think it had many hours on the motor. I found some loose wires in the solenoid box and under the console. I found a diagram via this forum and will get started on it Monday. I will also upload some pics of the transom and wiring. I may need so advice on both!

I can't believe you would want to restore such an ugly boat!!!! You and that Sam Phelps fella??? Just can't figure you guys out. You do realize that you will spend hours and hours of time, a lot of money, You'll itch like crazy, you'll get frustrated, confused, mad just about every emotion you can think of and for what, I'll tell you what... Just about the most rewarding experience of your LIFE!!!! With the help of Mr. Phelps you are in GREAT hands. He went above and beyond on his build. He has just about every skill in the book that you'll need to do your restoration and he'll be more than happy to share with you. The rest of the guys here on the forum will be an encyclopedia of knowledge for you so don't worry about not knowing what to do. Before it's over, you'll be able to do it all.
I'll be keeping an eye on this one!!!!!

Thanks for the "laugh" ...... I just read the first line and when I finally stopped laughing and finished the paragraph I realized you were "just kidding". I hear a lot of talk about transom jigs and bending plywood to get it to fit the curved transoms. Is there a forum with pictures? I do believe that is the way I am going to go. Can I "stud up"the sides and bolt through the outer skin/through the plywood/into the "stud" with some type of lag bolt or am I like "way off".

I have to agree with you about the Phelps guy! I would love to do what he did with the back seats. I need to s-l-o-w down and go back through all of the pics and see exactly what he did to obtain that! Really cool......he "stepped out of the box" for sure!

If you check the first link in my signature below, it has some clamps you can build that will allow you to use 4 layers of 3/8" plywood and glue and clamp them in place to follow the curvature of the transom. Will be pretty easy to do.

Believe me , sometimes I was thinking that I had " stepped in something " while scratching my head on the jump seats. Was not a lot of room back there and the o/b just did fit . :faint: It would have never had turned out so well without the help from that "old okie" guy and the rest of the crew thats for sure !

Thanks Wood, Will do! My in-laws are in town till Friday so I will be a while before getting back into it. I want to pull it out into the yard and get some better pics. The wiring probably needs to be my first step. My problem right now is prioritizing.
I can't get over this forum. I am on page 7 of Phelp's forum on restoration and it has a lot of what I am going to need. I will simply keep the forum posted with progress and pics.

I'm on page 14 of your forum right now with the restoration of your boat. I don't want to "re-ask" what you have already covered. I am copying and pasting what I will need in a folder on my computer and will "re-hash" as needed. Thanks for asking all the right questions and posting such great pics. You made it easy for me! I am sure I will have plenty of questions, but right now I want to go through your complete forum....If you EVER come across a hard top please keep me in mind. if the center of the clamp, about at the top of the transom stays constant, WIDENING the clamp by spreading the 2X4's apart will tighten the clamps at the bottom of the transom.....

Here's a basic Boat Wiring Diagram. JBC is correct on the clamps. You first adjust the lower bolt to get the clamp to fit snugly to the top of the transom by tightening the bolt you then loosen the upper bolt to tighten the lower section of the clamp. Once you build one, you should practice with it a bit and you'll quickly get the hang of it on how to use em. I'd highly recommend getting a fuse breaker panel as shown in the diagram. They're cheap and sold right here on iBoats!

Yep the H/T looks really cool but a bit cramped for headroom . Making a mold to build one would be pretty fun . But would I make a mold to build a part or use mine to form a part .. Would take a lot of glass with many layers to build the right thickness . That would be a cool thread just by itself .

Just wanted to come aboard and watch another nice MFG brought back to better than new condition...

You've already scored with some of the most helpful and knowledgeable guys here on the forum, so you are off to a great start

If you EVER come across a hard top please keep me in mind.

After you get some practice and experience working with plywood and fiberglass, you will have all of the basic knowledge to just build your own custom hard top...
It really wouldn't be that difficult and you can make it to fit your needs...

Wow! Build my on hard top! I can promise you one thing....I ain't that Phelps guy when it comes to Jack-of-them-all!!!!
I will be super excited to get the transom built and the wiring finished....but I ain't saying I ain't gonna try!!!!!
I have been down for 3 days now with back problems. I go to Dr. tomorrow for adjustment, was too sore on Friday. I was able to get the boat out in the yard and find some boards for clamps. Played 2 back to back rounds of gold with my father-in-law and found out that you do get old whether you "think" you do or not!
