Re: MFG Blue Paint Question

Well I got the same color and will be mixing some useing valspar tractor paint with a hardner. I think Mark had a paint # using ace paint.
not sure how to attach the thread . I ,m not the best at worken a computer. You should start a thread in the boat repair/restore forum.
The fella,s there really know there stuff and are always willing to help. Click on my thread link below ,were starting to talk paint. Look on Woodonglass,s Blue Flamingo thread starting at page 10 , very informative!

I don't think the paint comes in blue ..... you have to mix it to get the right color. I am not a painter so I don't know why the hardner is used but I know I used it to paint my hull and it went on nice and dried hard as nails. I used the roll 'n roll method to paint the hull. If you send a pm to Woodonglass he will be happy to give you the formula to mix the color that you want. He has a lot of helpfull tips on his "Flamingo" thread.

Roll n' roll is like roll n' tip ( if your familar with that ) but you use two rollers instead of a brush. Copied this from Woodonglass ----> Wet roller with paint an roll out about 4-6 square feet. Thin coats work best and help prevent runs. If you can HEAR the paint (Sticky Sound)you are rolling too long. Put the first roller in a Plastic bag and use another roller. Wet it out but wring out almost all of the paint and then Re-roll the area you just painted. Use a very LIGHT stroke and the paint should lay down with NO Bubbles!. Put this roller in the bag and use the other roller again. Repeat this process untill the boat is painted. Always do the re-roll with a damp roller with very little paint in it and LISTEN. You will hear the sound that lets you know when it's time to stop. It's kind of a sticky sound.

Here is a great link to a video on the Roll n' tip method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-SGcSlNmoo&feature=related

Did you use wax on the gelcoat? Don't. Use a compound and polisher, and finish with a product called "Gel Gloss." Maybe that will work for you? Don't know. Gelcoat on mine gets hazy fast if I wax it. Although I have waxed it now and then... .sigh,

Re: MFG Blue Paint Question

Hi Mark, Well today the family and i went out and washed her down and my wife was using rubbing compound then polishing compound on the hull, the hull came out beautiful but the deck and any blue areas were just too faded so i think i am going to use an electric buffer with rubbing and polishing compound on the hull and paint the deck and blue areas, problem now will be finding a match for the white deck paint to match the hull color , here is a pic of the hull after buffing up a sectionMFG boat 009 small.JPGMFG boat 006 small.JPG

Re: MFG Blue Paint Question

woosterken is correct- it is not "pure white"

Mine is fairly white as actually I had filled gouges and screw holes and then wet sanded and sprayed the sheers with Duplicolor acrylic lacquer "linen white" in spray bomb from NAPA. A good-enough match seems to be Interlux "matterhorn white" which isn't quite pure white either- transom outer is Interlux Matterhorn White left over from another boat job. Did it with about 8 cans when I was broke a number of years ago. Bought two or three cans every week when I got paid LOL and called it my "boat payment."

The white on my boat is waxed with Maguires....

Re: MFG Blue Paint Question

Well i guess i need to choose a polyurethane or acrylic base paint, suggestions?, reason i ask is because the Interlux is poly i believe and the paint from Ace is acrylic

ACE does have an acrylic latex deck enamel- I really good product but NOT what you want on your boat.

What you want is ACE Polyurethane Floor and Deck Paint. I will try to post more info later. If your local ACE doesn't carry that you probably should use the Interlux or something like it. There are other suggestions for paint as well. The ACE Polyurethane works nice and properly applied has a pretty nice gloss finish as well.
