Microwave loud Hum no heat

First off I want to show the wonderful wiring job that was done on this

My microwave is probably about 13 years old and is a Kenmore built in unit with fan and lights over my stove. To replace this is probably around $800. I have looked up the possible components that could be doing this. Magnatron $163, High Voltage Transformer $98, High Voltage Capacitor $39 and the high voltage rectifier $4. Any recomendations on what you suggest I do. Replace the whole unit or just buy parts? If parts all of the above or only certain parts? These prices are off of sears site and I am sure I can get them for probably 20 % cheaper locally. Also I already put a box in the wall and have a correct outlet for the power cord now. Thanks for any help.

HOLY whatever Batman, thats the scariest thing I have EVER SEEN!
What numb nut did that? How long has it been like that? Lucky the house aint a pile of ashes..
Best bet get some demensions, try and find a unit that will slide into the old opening, do a little trim work..

The people that owned the house were Russian immigrants who barely spoke english. I believe their idea is what works is good. That cabinet had cooking stuff in it and this is the first I have seen it. I have lived here 2 years now. I found some decent priced units that will fit around $300 so I am going to replace it instead of repair. After seeing this I started looking around and found where the wiring is to the air condidioner. That is a work of art as well.

Dude, you can get a new microwave for 40 bucks. Let the POS die. It's no longer safe and no longer worth it.

Man I miss the old days when you could fix things instead of replace them. This model had convection, 1200 watts power an exhaust fan and most imortant the popcorn button. The new one only has the exhaust and 1200 Watts power. Never tried to brown or let alone make a turkey in the thing. New wall box, outlet and face plate was $3.00 and it took less then an hour to get the electrical installed. I am sure when I pull it the exhaust is not right. New one comes in tomorrow.

I'd say your mag is bad. The hum is coming from the high voltage transformer. Still not worth the time/expense of repair.

Our commercial units, if they go bad and the repair is over $1100, we get them replaced. New comm unit is around $2400. Of course they put out 4K watts on a 208 volt supply.

By the looks of the wiring, I'd be checking many more unforeseen junctions.

Dispose of it properly after you pull it...most places have recycle centers that take them. Don't want it to go to the dump, where some numbnut can try to cannabilize parts off it and wind up getting electrocuted by the stored voltage.

Get rid of it and the wires. Go get a new over the range micro for about 200 bucks and install it. Any other way may burn your house down. ant worth it.Looks like they used masking tape..I would have at least used duck tape.gez

Not masking tape. It was butcher tape. Must have been the wife that did it. New unit is in. Gonna wait till winter to fix the sheetrock.

Man, that is a crazy wiring job, your's looks much better. Gald you found it. there was a post around here of a crazy wiring job too. I would agree that the magnatron is toast.

Pull the capicator off it. They work great as good gags... Just charge that puppy up and toss to a buddy and yell CATCH. Just start running, 'cause if it don't kill em, he'll be chasing you down. We used to do that a long time ago and boy I can still feel the pain. We played it safer though and used voltage/current reduced that was about equal to the stun guns they use today.

Caps out of microwaves have killed. Not a good gag to play if your not up to the consequences. I just got back from a high voltage safety class and this was one of the topics. It opened my eyes since the equipment that caused 2 deaths is the same kind that I work on. It has made me more aware of the danger of the voltage that lurks in those caps.

Boats kill, cars kill, prescript drugs kill and a whole lot of other things that we play with and try out. The one's in older TVs have killed as well. Not to get into a peeing contest, as I don't totally disagree with your point but just about any amount of electricity can kill a person and the most dangerous combination is that in American households as it closley matches that of a human heart beat. Guess my point was that you could pull it out and play with it, IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING as lower voltage and hi amp isn't anything more than static electricity.

Sorry, had that backwards.... It should have been low amps and high voltage. It generally takes about 500v to casue a static electricity spark.
