I had to replace my key switch as the key got lost I had another switch in stock but with different letters. I am thinking that the Purple white is choke and on the one i took off that went to the C. On the new key there is no C.

There is M,M,I,B,A and what looks like an 8 but it is very hard to read.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Other colors are Red, Yellow , 2 purple together, Purple/white and the other color I can't tell.

The motor now starts but when I turn the key on I can feel the choke engaging right away.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mid 80's 50 Key switch

what terminal did you put your choke wire on (purple/white)?

one of the purples probably goes to the overtemp horn, the other is switched accessory power,

don't you have a black (ground) and black/yellow (kill circuit)?

get out your multimeter, set it to continuity, and test the switch terminals.

key in "off" position should connect the two "M" terminals (Magneto: black and black/yellow)

key in "start" position should connect "B" (Battery: red or red/purple) to the start terminal, I'm guessing it'll be "I" (Ignition? yellow/red).

key in "on" position should connect "B" to "A"

find out when terminal "8" is connected to terminal "B"

does the new keyswitch have a "push-to-choke" feature? if not you'll need to add a choke button (momentary switch) to hook your purple/white wire to.

Thanks for the Help
You have to push the key in to choke it. What would the Purple Whit lead gotoo on the switch??

Thanks again \Shaun

Re: Mid 80's 50 Key switch

the OEM switch was "push-to-choke" and the purple/white choke wire was on terminal "C". Don't know what you've got there.

Maybe the "8" is an "S", which would be the "start" terminal, the yellow/red wire. Not sure what "I" is if that's the case.

This is why I recommended testing the terminals for continuity. Was there no documentation with your new switch?

Re: Mid 80's 50 Key switch

I will get out the Multi Meter today. No instructions as I took the other switch out of a Evinrude that I had to lay to rest earlier this year. Similar Vintage.

Old parts never die they just get recycled!!!

Thanks again for your help this Web site has been very usefull.
