mid 80's e-rude 35hp lower unit removal

how does the lower unit on a e-rude 35hp (E0001090) E35ECSM come off, I have it loose but will not drop down any further

Remove the water pick up screens and you disconnect the shift linkage there.

I disconnected the shaft - the upper shaft still has the nut on it, I assume that is what is holding it from dropping on down - feels like it anyway - ideas here?

May need to scrape the paint off the upper rod.-------------Then slide the upper nut up.---------------Then remove that black plastic keeper.------That keeper is split.
