mid 90s 70hp evinrude stalls when put in gear-red nob

i got a mid 90s evinrude, ran great when i bought it, tryed starting it after about a month of sitting and it wouldnt...theres a red nob on the side that i thought was of the engine under the cowling i turned it all the way and the boat started but would stall when put in gear... is that the manual choke on these engines and electric choke isnt working?

The picture shows the valve in the manual open position.--------Move it to be in line with the valve body.------Turn key on and push in, do you hear it go " click " ??

at first it was all the way to the left and i could hear the click when i pushed the key in, the boat wouldnt start, i turned it all the way to the right and it start but would stall when put in gear, when you say in line with the valve do you mean turned to the right? ive always had inboard/outboards and have never seen something like this

Same motor had same problem..... the red lever is connected to the electric primer and should be turned to left pointing away from engine, there is no choke on these motors.... pump the fuel bulb up hard, turn key and push in( if ur hearing is good you should hear a click telling u it opened to allow fuel into the intake maniflod) turn the key one more notch while pushing the key in and holding it there.... engine should start.... if not turn the red lever 180 degrees counter clock wise, should be pointing towards the engine, now it is in the manual mode.... pump the fuel bulb a few times and turn key to start motor, if it starts quickly turn the red lever back 180 degrees to the automatic position and the motor should stay running, if not try it again....

Put the lever inline with the solenoid. When you go to start it, pump up the primer bulb and then push the key in when you're cranking it over and hold it in until it starts. After it starts you may have to feather the key to keep it running.
