I'm to the point of saying (edit) it to everything. I'm fifty the wife is 47 and she feels the same way I do. The house is all paid in full, No other bills except utilities and ins. Were both sick of the Metromess. Were to the point of selling out and finding a spot in the piney woods of east Tx. A small mobile home would suit us just fine. Do what we want to, work when we want to, fish. Just live like a couple of hermits. We've got alot now, but starting to find out that we don't require much to entertain us and we would make the rest of our life as simple as posible.<br /><br />Anybody ever feel this way?

At some point and to some extent, we all go through a phase like that where we re-examine what life has become. At least you are not tempted to leave your wife as well.<br /><br />I say; do whatever makes you happy, as long as you don't hurt anyone in the process.

jeez.....I'm only 24 and what you describe sounds like paradise. Don't make this a what-if experience.....just do it.

Re: Mid-Life Crisis

I have watched people do exactly what you describe. They move up to my neck of the woods after selling the big house and all the stuff, and build or buy nice little homes and say they are downsizing to a simpler life. Then the next year they add a room on. The year after that they do another addition off the other end of the house. After that they build the shop building to hold the new boat/RV/six ATVs. The small tv graduates to a large rear projection or flatscreen. The Subaru graduates to the Lexus. I have seen it way too many times, once a person gets used to a certain way of life, they almost always end up back at that level again. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot though...

They say life is greener in the next pasture over. Fertilizer makes it greener, so that must mean there is more crap going on over there.<br /> <br />Sounds like a hobby is in order.

WONDERFUl CONCEPT but it has finacial disaster, do you have enough to survive drawing only 3-4% of your earning from your accumalated assets to live on, for ever? At age 50 you will not be eligible for SS disability should a event occur between the age of 60 and 68 when you become eligble for social security. thats the BIGGIE, ss disabiltity says you must have worked and earned x credits during the previous 10 years. reitire at 50 and you are screwed if a biggie hits, what about health care , age fifty, you got some company that is promising to cover you until medicare, I do, did when i was 50, but so did a lot of airline pilots. got a lifetime cap on your retireed health plan, one triple bypass can put that to rest. What is the life span on a mobile home, heating unit, and a car. and your life span of about 90 years. the bucks just arnt there, forget the above, forgive me donald. i didnt realize it was you.

Re: Mid-Life Crisis

I have a friend who lives in the woods, and I mean the woods. He has a 20x 30 metal building for a house .No electric, no phone, the only running water is if he pumps it to a tank on the roof with a hand pump.He raises every thing that he eats and makes a pile of money cutting wood and selling it.Would I trade him lifestyles? If I wasnt married,in a HEARTBEAT.

I am a little conflicted on this one, as I have ALWAYS had similar thoughts. But in the end, I think I am with JasonJ. I think you will end up bored, broke and bummed. I believe we are hardwired to accumulate stuff and improve our lives. If we weren't we would have just stayed in the cave until we starved or froze . . .

Re: Mid-Life Crisis

And to think my mid-life crisis was planning to take up motorcycle racing (again)! Best of luck with your decision, my only comment is to put everything in to making a go of whatever you decide to do. That way, if things go wrong it won't be for a lack of trying.
