Anybody ever add a cleat to the midship area of your boat? I 've been thinking about it because it would be very useful at times when I can't get enough dock to tie up due to other boats sitting there for extended periods loading all there crap.

Every boat I've ever had has had midship cleats. Just make sure you glass in some kind of backing behind the hull when you put them on.

Ours has them as well, do as suggested above and use a backing plate. I find the useful for hanging extra fenders as well

Re: Midship cleat?

I have them "at the thirds." My boat is 18' and has a total of ten cleats - two at the stern, four along the rails, two at the bow (edges because its a truhull) and one located to either side of the bow light.

Go ahead and add extra cleats; you'll be surprised at how many times the existing cleats aren't exactly where you want them.

I've added cleats, too. There never seem to be enough of them in the right places.

Given the size of your boat (18') and assumed weight of it (2000-2500 lbs?) you don't need to go crazy with backing plates. !/8" stainless or 1/4" aluminum is preferable, but you can get by fine with stainless fender washers (that's FENDER washers. not the standard sized ones),

agreed; your mid-ships cleat will not be used for anything taking any stress.

Good for an anchor or sea anchor to trun your boat sideways for fishing. Just be careful.

Re: Midship cleat?

Added a pair of retractable mid ship cleats a couple years ago. Was a good move on my part. The Boat has a bow cleat and one stearn cleat at each corner, but nothing else. I use the midship cleats to tie off at my slip.
Found a pair on ebay that matched my existing ones exactly.

Re: Midship cleat?

my old 23 footer had 9 perfectly placed and my new 29 footer only has 5 and 2 are unreachable from the cockpit. im definitely adding at least 2. right now my bow lines share one cleat mounted in front of my windlass and my stern lines and spring lines share cleats. PITA!

That's worth more like 2 bucks, not 2 cents.

I buy aluminum flat bar at the big box stores. The 2 inch wide stuff works well - just cut a length of it about equall to the full length of the cleat. Drill holes (a little oversized) at the appropriate places and use for backing.

Re: Midship cleat?

My boat had the standard two bow and two stern. I added midship cleats becasue its usless to hang fenders from the bow when that part of the boat will NEVER touch the pier when tied. Now I have a place to hang a fender and protect the foward half of my boat.
