Might be looking for a new outboard

We have a 21' Pro-line with a Evinrude 150 on the back. I believe the engine is a '89. We are having troubles with the tilt assembly. I think it just needs a new motor which isn't so bad but if it needs a whole new assebly it could cost us more then the engine is worth. This would prompt us to start looking for a new motor.

Two Questions..

The 150 on it pushes the boat along just fine for me, at about 5000-5500 rpms I'm doing perhaps 25-28 mph.
Now if I go looking for a new motor I'd like a 4-stroke. Do you think a 125 would be too small? Whats the smallest size that I should be looking at for a 21' boat?

Also is there a good resource for outboard engine research? One that compares the different engines; prices, performace ect.

$ is of course an object. and I'd like to get the most for my $. I'm thinking $6k tops for a used 150. perhaps a 96-98. I'd like to spend less but unsure about the motors that aren't well known.

Tressin,

Pro Lines are NOT light boats. A 150 is your entry level.

A 125 would be a slug and would soon wear on your nerves and destroy itself.

A 150 is minimum. Remember, many (not all) four strokes are going to be heavier.

I doubt you are going to find a 150+ four stroke in your price range. They are too new.

Look here, for engines that are warranted and have a great reputation for used quality.

http://www.boatmotors.com/rebuilt_outboard_motors/

Tressin
Go ahead bite the bullet...get a 200+ Merc or Yammie and your boat will feel new!

I replaced a 120 Johnson with a 115 Johnson 4/stroke on my 18 ft and am very happy. I don't miss the 2/stroke at all.

Yeah,

I'm thinking of a 140 hp Suzuki 4-stroke. Reasonably priced and I've heard good things. We'll see what the repair place says I guess.
