Might need a new water pump (impeller)?

I am not sure if I need a new water pump or not on my 1976 35 hp Johnson. When I used the flusher on idle, water came out the exhaust up high. Then I put it in a trash can and started it and nothing happened. The water is above the lower unit and pee holes, so I wonder if it needs replaced or if I have a little to much water in the can. If needing replaced, is it a job for a novice with a manual and would I need any special tools to fix it. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

You check for overheating by running motor with the cover off for a few minutes (say 5 or 10) and seeing if you can touch the block near the cylinder heads without getting burned. You should be able to keep the fingers there for a while (temp should be ~ 145° F). If it's not overheating, nothing more to do.

Howdy, DDyer.

If you don't know when it was last changed, change it, and keep track.

They should be changed when they are 1 or 2 years old, even if stored.

If you wait until it fails you will probably have a lot bigger problem than an impeller.

Good luck. :)
