2K,

Go to one of the major marine stores and look for ozone generators. They will kill what's there and keep it from happening again. They might have them on this site at Iboats.

In the meantime, a mild solution of Simple Green and water works well.

Re: mildew

Hi all,

The ozone generators are usually 110 volt and are completely self contained. They are about the size of a toaster. They draw very little amperage and are meant to be used when boats and other things are sitting idle.

They simply add ozone to the air which is an unfreindly medium for mold to grow in.

Re: mildew

never heard of it but sounds like that would work fine in preventing a reoccurance but need to clean mildew off of fabric with out bleach if possible.

Re: mildew

guess will have to take chances w/bleaching solution??????????? next is the bottom paint, it was started to be removed but i have to complete. is there any good antifoulong paint that is reasonable and will last more than 2 seasons. boat will not be kept in the water, and do i have to completely remove the old or can i just smooth out the ruff spots and paint over. is color a preferance or is one color better than other <IE attracting fish>

Re: mildew

Simple Green, available at Wal Mart is effective in removing the mold already there. You probably won't want to use it full strength.

2K,

Depends on if you want anti fouling or not? Or just color?

Any of the paints from Petit or Interlux are all good quality.

Read the application instructions carefully, some of the anti types can be VERY toxic and should really only be applied by a pro.

Check out WestMarine at: www.westmarine.com.
They have an excellent Q & A section on bottom paints.

I am assuming your boat is Fiberglass and has an outboard or I/O?

If so, use the paint that has the lowest CuOx
(copper oxide) you can find. Otherwise high copper paints will play havoc with the zincs on the boat and the aluminum parts of your outboard or outdrive. Some paints now have Teflon added which lowers the copper content. This is especially true if your boat sits in a marina where shore power is available.

Best suggestion is to ask around your part of the world. Talk to marine dealers and owners who have similar boat/engine combos as to yours.
