have a two line mile master tank. want to line the inside of the tank, then a rebuild. i am in process of the nuts and screws in the tank with some paint thinner.
i dont think i can get all the rust out, so what is the product that you have used? and the results? seems the por15 isnt a godd choice.
caswell? seems like a good product, but pricey
kbs coating 5200?
red-kote? pretty cheap.
thank you for your opinions.

Try cleaning it by Electrolysis. Google "cleaning metal gas tanks by electrolysis" and read through a couple of the articles. Usually works well unless severely damaged. In that case, you dont want to use it anyways. Remember, it is under pressure.

You could try putting a small amount of some heavy gravel inside the tank and slosh it around with some water. Then completely clean and dry the tank.

Most better motorcycle shops sell a fuel tank coating that works...... the key to whatever you use AND in many cases there is no need to use anything...... use the gravel method, nuts and bolts, and whatever but, do not take any shortcuts. I have used acids on some tanks too but a hazardous process.

Clean as possible before you coat it. ;)

The best product I know of is KREEM TANK LINER, go to youtube and do a search for D-rays shop, he takes you thru all the steps on a older honda cycle tank. cheers

this is a most challenging decision about the tank vs now going to single line. cost of the fuel pump will actually be cheaper than rebuilding the tank. i just acquired a 54, qd15 and wanted to at least see if it runs. i cleaned off the motor, then looked inside the tank and saw some ugly old fuel and some rust. :blue:
i am not a big fan of metal tanks due to california's fuel. my thoughts were to just clean out the tank, replace the hoses to test the motor. well it looks like i may be leaning to the fp install
thanks for the replies!

Another option for your rusty tanks;

Evapo-Rust rust remover description page

This stuff is amazing! I have used it to de-rust a bunch of tools, and parts, and it works great.
The best part about it, it's not a nasty chemical!

You can use it over and over. It's completely safe, non-toxic, no fumes, and as long as your only using it for removing rust (no gas, grease, chemicals involved), you can pour it down the drain when it stops working. I bought my gallon of from Harbor Freight for $30, but have seen gallons of it at Autozone for $20.

As far as tank lining is concerned, when I did my motorcycle tank, I used Por-15 tank liner. 8 years later, and it's still holding fine. I chose the Por-15 at the time because I had read too many forum posts about people who Kreemed their tank, and were having problems with the liner breaking away, and clogging their fuel filter.

I am looking into doing the same with my rusty 2 line tank. Whatever you do...make sure that you don't slosh around nuts and bolts in a flammable liquid. Klean Strip Phosphoric Prep & Etch is an option that appears to be NON-FLAMMABLE according to the MSDS. It was recommended to me by another antique outboard guy. Looks like it is around $20 a gallon at HD or Lowes.

Disclaimer - you need to read the label and determine on your own if this is suitable for your use.

Klean-Strip?

I checked around my area with radiator repair shops. I found one that will clean it out, reline it and prime it making ready for me to paint it for $70. They normally paint them black, but I don't want a black gas tank. You might want to consider this option too. Probably cost about the same as all the chemicals and tank liner.

I am a convert ....after dumping 5 gallons of gas in the lawn (boat tilted up and drain open so gas went in the ground due to a pin hole in the pressure tank)

Drill a bypass cover, cover with a aluminum plate and mount a OMC pump on it. change to a newer single line connector & get a new tank at Wallymart

(Either case...plug the pressure nipple behind the carb if your going to use a bypass cover drilled and nippled for a vacum pulse to a Mikuni pump which is also good but ackward to mount...but it works

see Utube on conversions

no problem to feed the motor fuel without the pressure tank if all you want to do is barrel test it for now!! all you need to do is set up a gravity feed with a single line/primer bulb .

If the tank is that bad, might be easiest to invest in a good/clean tank. I have sold restored ones with new paint/decals/double line/gasket kit, etc... for under 100 bucks. You can get a good, working tank for around 50 bucks or so. Might be easier than lining yours.

If you do decide to go with a fuel pump, also easy. Let us know what you decide and we can help.

Post a wanted ad at aomci.org if you want a new tank.

frustrating part is the tank seems to work fine. i cover the two outlets, and prime the tank and i get plenty of pressure, with no visible signs of leakage. its just the inside of the tank is pretty rusted.

Re: mile master two line tank rusty now what?

You're testing the primer system, not pressure. Pumping the primer button pushes fuel into the carb. Once started, the air line pumps air into tank-pressurizing it, and then the fuel gets 'pushed' out into your carb. Primer button will not pressurize tank.

Good luck!
