As many of you are all aware of the recent theft of a lap top computuer storing literally millions of military records,I have a question regarding the matter. Is anyone aware of a website that can be visited to see if one has been a victim of this recent issue by entering ones military id number or other personal info? There were supposedly some 20+ million records stolen. Thanks for any feedback.

I doubt it.....
I'm sure it is an ongoing investigation & the leak, (or reporting) was to give vets a heads up while not naming names....
Good luck with this, hopefully the person didn't know what they stole.....JK

HM, maybe you are not paying attention to what's going on in this case, there is serious evidence that the man actually sold the laptop to hackers and only claimed it was stolen. Chief

Wonder how soon those affected will know whether their records were on the list?If ever.Reason I'm concerned is just the shear number mentioned.Talk about incompetance in the safe keeping of records. Is anybody awake at the wheel of goverment anymore?Seems the ones involved in loading virtually every document known to man onto computer software didn't stop and think whether they should. It's not like identity theft and fraud is something new.

Re: military i.d. theft case question.

It was reported that if you were discharged after anytime after 1975 then your information was included in the stolen materials, and in certain instances, before 1975, although they didn't elaborate about that too much. 1994 for me, so it's a little disconcerting, but there must be hundreds of thousands of individuals on that list. Can they really capitalize on that many people? Or will they just pick a few "good ones"?

Re: military i.d. theft case question.

My military service is no secret from 73-93 and if they want to steal my identity I doubt they will get too far.

Look at it from outside the box..... ANYONE who was involved in the military from 1975 and on now has a new excuse for overdue bills, bad debt and anything near related to inedtity theft.

Sadly, there will be former military taking advantage of this.

I have not received a "publishers clearing house" letter in almost 15 years.... I wonder who is going to buy all those names and info? I will watch for my increase in junk mail.

Bob
if they have your ssn, birthdate and full name its easy from there to open all sorts of accounts in your name.
while most of the record is public some is supposed to be covered under the 1975 privacy act. in anycase I worry more about those that stand to lose everything than one or two that may take advantage of it.
if you dont belive me about it Email your info and in ten days ill open and max 10 credit cards in your name.

Rod- I understand and know how it works. I know it happens quite often too. I am of the opinion that a identity thief will get what they want regardless.... Like a padlock only keeps honest people out. No thanks on the cc offer! ;)
Bob

Re: military i.d. theft case question.

hahaha
yep I agree, locks just tend to keep honest folk honest.
but I honestly dont understand how so much data could be so carelessly stolen.
I hope it was stolen anyway, if it was sold and reported stolen then the "thieves" will know what they bought.
with the info they have its possible they can divert my retirement bennies and all kinds of nasty things.
I could eventually get it back but who is gonna pay the cost of the litigations ?
is it my (our) responsibility to pay for yet another govt screw up ?
