Milkshake oil

Have a 67 sterndrive 888 and the oil is 2x the volume and and looks like a milk shake. It also smells like gas. Could this be a PCV problem. I know that i need to pull and inspect the heads and have the risers pressure tested. Could this priblem be anything else? I am new to the boating world and the previous owner obviously didnt take care of the motor. <br /><br />searching for answers

Milkshake usually means WATER. Gasoline just thins the oil. You either have a cracked block, head or head gasket.

Oil looking like a milkshake usually means water is mixing with the oil. Cause can be as simple as leaky head gasket up to cracked heads and/or block. Causes of Gasoline smell in oil can be flooding, running rich, misfiring of cylinder, any of which will have gasoline draining into the crankcase. These older engines had mechanical fuel pumps, sometimes a leaky diaphram can let raw gas into the crankcase too. A clogged crankcase ventilation system, be to a pcv valve or just breather hoses off the valve cover, will prevent the gasoline from being purged.

if i have a cracked manifold, how does the water get into the crank case. If there's water in the cylenders i was under the impression the engine wouldnt even turn over. could gas leakage be caused by a malfunction in the pcv system?<br /><br /><br />hoping its only the manifold

You have a Crack, Somewhere..........<br />It Could be Anywhere that Oil,+ Water are separated by Cast Iron.......<br />You don't say Where you're From.... Does it Freeze there ?????<br />Water in the Cylinders, Will, Given time, Flow past the Rings, To the Base..........<br /><br />I'm Not Positive,<br />But, I think your motor Doesn't Have a PVC.......

ive been searching the foum and this seems to be the culprit 99% of the time. I does freeze in the winter time here so i hope to god the previous owner cared enough to winterize the motor. when i pull the manifold off will a crack be blatently obvious or is it somthing that needs pressure testing? If the crack is small, is it somthing that can be fixed with good ol JB weld? Trying to fix it on a tight budget (which is a joke in itself). <br /><br />I have one more question, there is a switch on the throttle arm on top of the engine. It has 2 ble wires that have no connections. When the boat is put into gear the arm hits the switch. The service manuel gives me little to no information about it.<br /><br />just curious
