Re: milky cylinder

That's what you get when you mix oil and water. Did it only happen on #4 because that's kinda better news than all 4 - means water isn't inside the crankcase (yet)

Pull the cylinder head - might be a bad gasket or a corroded head. As you are in San Diego I fear salt corrosion.

Re: milky cylinder

just did a compression check, 1-3 140psi, # 4 pegs the gauge at 300, i'm guessing thats because of the fluid

Re: milky cylinder

Sounds like the head gasket. You'll need to remove the head anyway.J

Re: milky cylinder

It could be the exhaust gasket or head gasket. Process of elimination. I've seen either one cause water in a cylinder. I've also had one where the stainless steel baffle under the exhaust cover crack and leak water into a cylinder.

Re: milky cylinder

Sometimes it's hard to tell if the head gasket is leaking. While you have the head off, check to make sure you don't have a crack in the side of the cylinder wall on the bottom cylinder. Move the piston to the bottom of the stroke to expose as much of the cylinder wall as possible. If all looks OK, replace the head gasket, and fire it up. If you're still getting water, I'd take a look at the exhaust cover gasket. The L-Drive exhaust cover doesn't have the stainless steel baffle so you can rule out a cracked baffle. If water is leaking in from the exhaust side, it's probably just a bad gasket.

Re: milky cylinder

isnt there a gasket between the power head and the spacer plate to the transom, where the water inlet is, any chance its leeking there? either way it looks like i need to pull the power head

Re: milky cylinder

Yes there is a gasket between the plate and the block. There is a chance it may be leaking. Never seen one leak as there is a lot of gasket material there. If water came out of the head bolt hole when you removed the bolt, I would suspect a bad head gasket. I would think that the head gasket should seal the bolt hole from water. Anyways, check for a hairline crack in the cylinder wall. If you can't find any, put a new head gasket on and test first. If you still have a leak, I wouldn't pull the power head until you try replacing the exhaust cover gasket first. It's not uncommon for it to leak. The gasket is pretty narrow and doesn't have a lot of surface area to get a good seal. NOTE: Use caution when removing the exhaust cover bolts. They're easy to snap off. Depending on how much corrosion is on the threads. Sometimes they come right out, other times they're a major pain. If you find one that is stubborn, tap it lightly with a hammer.

Re: milky cylinder

the problem is the power head HAS to come out to get the exhaust off, the bolts arent accessible

i forgot to mention that before this happened the impellor went bad, i didnt think it got that hot though, does that stear me more towards exhaust?

Re: milky cylinder

I forgot the exhaust cover on the L-Drive is a lot thicker and very little clearance. As far as the water in the bolt hole. I looked at one of my old blocks. The bottom left bolt on the lower cylinder is drilled all the way through into the exhaust chamber. If there was a leak in the exhaust cover gasket and water was leaking into the exhaust chamber it would most likely accumulate right where that bolt hole is. When you remove the bolt, it would be like pulling the drain plug on your tub.
