Re: milky cylinder

Are you sure it's leaking between the head and the block? It's not leaking between the head cover and the head is it?

Re: milky cylinder

Yeah I would think it should be pretty easy to tell, but you never know. I'd take another close look. It's hard to imagine the head gasket leaking water like that and have decent compression.

Re: milky cylinder

but if the steel part is sealing at the cylinders and its just leaking by the water jacket wouldnt compression be OK?

Re: milky cylinder

Yeah this is kind of strange. As far as the cover, as you know, there is no gasket. Just some sealant. You mentioned you used permatex. Exactly what type of permatex?

Re: milky cylinder

The blue stuff is OK and should work, but I have switched to the Permatex Ultra Black or Ultra Grey. I would take the cover off, remove as much of the blue stuff with a wire wheel from the cover and head. Take some alcohol, carb cleaner or acetone and wipe both surfaces clean. Try some Permatex Ultra Black or Ultra Grey. Tighten the four head cover bolts and let it set up for at least 3 or 4 hours before you put the head on the block. Overnight would be best. If you put the head on the block and snug up the head bolts before the permatex sets up on the head cover, you may run the risk of squeezing out the permatex minimizing the chances of a good seal. Kind of depends on how tight you snug the head bolts up, but you get the idea.

Re: milky cylinder

As long as it's fuel, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Is that the same bolt that had the water oil mixture coming out before you started the repair?

Re: milky cylinder

Which ignition system do you have? Prestolite or Thunderbolt system? Blue coils and Blue CDI modules which is the Prestolite ignition system, or the Black coils with a switch box which is the Thunderbolt system?

Re: milky cylinder

If it was running fine before you pulled the power head I would double check the wires on the 12 position terminal block on the coil/CDI module mounting plate.

If that looks OK, double check that you don't have any pinched or broken wires behind the coil mounting plate. I know it's kind of hard to see behind the coil mounting plate, so it helps to remove the 3 nuts that hold the plate to the block and pull it away from the block to check.

If no pinched or broken wires, check the two stator wires that go to CDI module that fires #3 & #4 coils. If you're looking at the CDI modules it's usually the one on the left closest to the head. The wires are either Brown/Yellow and Brown/Blue, or Black/Yellow and Black/Blue, or just Yellow and Blue. Depends on exact year of you system. These wires go to the first two terminal connections (all the way to the left) on the 12 position terminal block on the coil mounting plate. Disconnect one of the two wires that come from the stator from the terminal block and measure the resistance between it and the other stator wire (Yellow and Blue). It should be between 680 and 850 Ohms.
