My manual for my 92 Evinrude 40 hp only tells me to go the dealer if my gear case oil is not clear, that is, milky, and it is. What's the usual cause of that leakage of water into the gear case and is it an expensive repair?

Well it sounds like you have a bad seal somewhere. I would first check the seal on the oil drain plug, then the prop shaft, and if that is not it, you will then need to drop the lower unit and check the internal seals ( I dont know the proper name for them).

Usually costs about 200 bucks to reseal a lower unit, they seal it, and true up the shaft on a lathe and polish everything. (here anyway) and it is just like new.

Jack,

Ditto Nathan.

Replace the seals on the fill and drain plugs, refill the L/U, and see if that fixes your problem.
