milky gearcase oil on rebuild

I have a 1985 140 that has a brand new powerhead,<br />and waterpump, The gearcase was pressure tested<br />last year when the engine was rebuilt. I notice that the the gearcase oil is milky. I thought that if they pressure tested the unit, it would show where the leaks are.<br />Is it a big deal to change seals, etc<br />HELP!!!!!

SS,sorry I cant help ,but maybe you can help me.Do you know if your motor has a large gearcase?15 spline on the prop hub?

The test of a gear case is both pressure and vacuum.But I've seen many cases pass both,even when the oil was milky.Go figure.<br />For a 1985 gearcase I recommend a complete reseal, not that big a job for someone who can do a waterpump,but pulling the prop shaft bearing carrier can be a problem.You'll be lucky tho I think our carrier has pre-tapped holes for a puller.<br /><br />DHP

I'm about to do the same thing. Do you need a specific puller to remove the bearing carrier?

I don't know, are the splines located at the end of prop shaft? I will check sinceI pulled off the prop for winterization.

Suggest you buy new nylon gaskets for your fill & drain plugs, refil with oil, run it for a few trips & check again. These gaskets are a common source of leaks & a cheap way to solve or eliminate the cause.

cpeck...sometimes you can catch the edge of one of the bearing carrier ribs with a slde hammer and pop it out.
