Hi. Can anyone tell me the most likely cause of having water getting into the trim/tilt hydraulic system. Could it be through the trim cylinders seals?? The oil in the resovoir is milky. We have the system which has the plastic resovoir with the vented cap. The boat is a 4.3L Mercruiser 1990.

usually the seals are worn and water hitches a ride on piston shaft as it retracts. over time it accumulates.

check lines for cuts and cracks. happened to me a few years ago and found a small hole that would gush out fluid and then draw water into the system. Water is getting in somewhere. Also check to see if your trim pump is going out or getting hot.

put the boat on a trailer and then have someone watch as another person raises and lowers the lower unit.

post back if you figure it out.

My boat's previous owner parked it in his yard without removing the drain plug. It filled with rain water and water leaked into the reservor through the cap. ehh
