Its a 56 30hp Johnson, I've re sealed l/u 2 times. Went out in boat the other day to try out seal job and fish. Loaded boat up and noticed milky oil coming out the weep hole again. A couple of days later decided to check gear lube. Pulled plug expecting to see the milk coming out of l/u. The oil was clear as a bell. I still had oil coming out of weep hole so I smelled it. It had a gas smell. Is it possible to have a leaking lower powerhead seal and still have a good running motor? Starts right up and idles good, runs wot good, mid range good, Probally has a couple of hours on motor since decarb, Plugs look normal, compression 135# and 130#, just rebuilt carb, no fuel leaking from carb. Don't know what wot rpm is, don't have tach. I think that is all the info I can think of.

Thanks.

Re: Milky oil out of weep hole

The weep hole you're looking at is a drain for the very bottom of the exhaust cavity, basically just below where the shift rod enters the lower unit. So what you're seeing is unburnt gasoline and 2-stroke oil, not lower unit oil. You mabey running a little rich causing excessive unburnt gasoline, but you can adjust that from the carb.
It may be that the bottom crank seal is leaking, but I doubt it. It's pretty much foolproof, and if it was you wouldn't be able to get the engine to idle well.

I think Paul said the "key" word...Idle.
If you do much idling such as trolling, etc, the weep you see will be magnafied as compared to one that may be run WOT right up to the last minute before shut-down at the bank-that's stretching alittle but you get the picture.
