Saw a kayak I am interested in. 9ft SOT Mini-X Malibu (I think), rigged for fishing. Anyone have any personal experience on one of these or can direct me to the appropriate forum? I need a Kayak that I can carry on top of car (2011 Hundai Sonata). Would probably want to venture out to Kelp Beds, but would not Surf Launch.

TIA

I like this site for good unbiased reviews. Everyone seems to like it for the most part. The most consistent complaint seems to be the tracking isn't the best, but it's a nine foot fishing kayak, so I'm sure you're not looking to cover a bunch of water miles or you'd be looking at a touring boat. Flush mount rod holders, lots of storage, nice seat, under forty pounds and a brand spankin' new one for six hundred bucks. What's not to like? There are lots of good kayaks out there designed for your intended use, and this appears to be one of 'em.;) I know you're not planning to surf launch, but I bet you'll eventually get a hankering to try it, so consider that. I'd say demo one (and lots of others) if you can. I would expect there to be some good paddle shops in and around Escondido, so I'd start there. There are so many choices that meet your needs. Tight lines.

I have one, use it on medium size rivers no more than class 3 rapids. On lakes it's okay if you plan not to go far. I also have an 8' sit-in for small stream where I think it will beat the S**t out of it. For lakes I have an Tarpon 120 Ultralite. It's been a couple years but I bought the Mini with a nice seat for $450 new from a local dealer going out of business. :D Bottom line love it and use it the most.

Thanks, for the confirmation. I think I will try a rental, there are a couple of places at La Jolla about a block from the beach, also a really good instructor in town that gives lessons both group and individual. This guy is a legend around here I am told and once landed a blue marlin in Baja from one. Surf launch looks fun, but also wet and hard to keep your fishing gear dry. You would have to lash them on, or maybe use a rod carrier or something. (things like this, I will learn as soon as I get into the sport, I am sure)

Tks.
