Minimize Through-Deck Screws ?

Recently bought a 1994 Skeeter BayPro CC. Did the usual "tap-tap" screwdriver test over whole hull and deck checking for bad wood. All was ok until I pulled the gas tank from under the cc to pull/repair the sending unit. The whole floor under the console was bad. I believe this was primarilly due to the number of screws penetrating the deck ...I counted 22. It appeared no 3M 4200 was used to seal the screws. The deck has been repaired, repainted and I am ready to re-assemble the cc, gas tank and cover hatches for batteries. Should I try to eliminate some non essential screws or just go back with all original screws and seal them with 4200 ? I want this to be a permanent repair but still need to plan on the probability of pulling the console in the future. Thanks for your comments.

The number of fasteners is up to you. You DO NOT want that console coming loose in a heavy sea.

The fact that they were not sealed is really the culprit to the rot.

By the way, 4200 is a sealer/adhesive. That may be a problem if you need to get that console up again.

I would use 5200.

4200 is somewhat removeable. 5200 is more difficult to remove. If you think that you would need to remove it in the future, then use 4200. They both are similiar products, the 4200 being easier to remove.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I have found the opposite to be true.

It says right on the packaging that the 4200 is semi-removable and on the package for the 5200 it says non-removeable. There is a grade in the top left corner of each im looking at it right now.

Use Boatlife sealer. It sticks, it seals, it doesn't crack, shrink, peel or harden, and it comes apart when you want it to.

Sorry for the confusion....I will not reduce the number of screws used to anchor the console to the deck. There was a kick plate (using 8 screws) in front of the gas tank that I was considering eliminating. Thanks !
