What is the minimum hp for a 6cyl merc 2 stroke engine. Cannot find Sn plate described by sensitive aussie. Only numbers stamped on mouning bracket. 1440 1333 HA2014 121. I have looked through the link supplied and see no sequence of numbers that compare to the ones I have... Will a block casting number help? I will need parts for this engine. Any help appreciated. And as goes without saying ....

I could ID it from a pic with the cowls on and off. If it's an inline 6 the minimum is 60hp (1957).

Most of them were in the 115-140 hp range. Parts are easy to match up.

-W

Yes, it is an inline Six. It is very similar to the pic supplied by the sensitive aussie in: Need help identifying Merc. I still couldn't find the plate he referenced. I think this one may be a 70's vintage. I will be needing a lot of parts before it is useable. It is mounted on about a 16 foot Power Cat Fiberglass hull.

If the powerhead is painted black, it either a 115 or a 150 for the most part. With very few exceptions, most of the parts are the same. If you can send me a couple pics to my email addy, I can look them over real close and narrow it down further.

-W

Still no luck on the camera, CC. the powerhead is not painted black, or if it was all the paint has been scrathed off. I can't find information on a Mark 78. The Maxrules listing by hp shows only 3 cylinders in the 70 hp category. Also, looking in the hp ranges suggested brings no positive results. The engine is definetly a six, and the cowling says Mercury. I guess my inability to send a picture has relegated me to a non-entity with the bully boys. Please point to the corner where I must stand on my head and I will obediently comply.

CC. you should have the pictures by now. No more if ands or "butts". Looks like the motor is even older than the boat. Were there many block version of the 6 cyl Merc? I make this to be a Mark 78, do you concure?

At the risk of being redundant and on advise of a friend I will bump this up. In video the axiom used to be, it ok to bump down but don't bump up. We will see if this still applies in the digital age. This message has been digitally remastered to remove offensive material.....

To err is human, to screw it up really good you need a computer. Pics on the way.

Pics came.

Looks like an earlier "direct reversing" 70hp unit.

Starter makes it go both ways. Off is the "silent neutral".

-W

Thank you. I have ordered a manual and timing belt. wow.... with these elements in hand I came make a stab at getting her running. The steering wheel turns but the motor don't swing. Any common problems that might cause this problem. We have a graduation in our house the 7th, guess your situation has settle down now. Later and thanks again.

Thank you, but ther serial number is no longer an issue. Seems like an extraordinarily stupid place to put a permanent identification number. Even though the block usually cracks before the freeze plug pushes out, at least in my experience.
