A friend of mine wants to give me a 55lb thrust transom Minn Kota minus the top part. Would the top off my 24lb thrust MK work? We figure it should because all it does is control/restrict the current. What do you guys think?

You are right in that "all it does is control the current" but the components required to control about 25 amps vs those required to control 50 amps are very different in size and cost. Your motor drew about half the current than the 55# motor. Just compare the size of the two motors. You might try it and see -- the most you will do is fry the controls so you now have two useless motors.

Silvertip is absolutely right. The brushes in the smaller motor and the wires they are connect to weren't built for that. Too much power on too small a wire has been the cause for many boat fires!!!!

A friend of mine suggested I hook up a dimmer switch. I wouldn't have reverse, but shouldn't that work? There has to be a way to get the 50 going cheaply and I can still have the 24.
