I have a 40 pd thrust ser# mkab1856248. motor won't run, I pulled the motor apart and the brushes and armature looked new. the relay clicks when you turn it on. the prop had a lot of fishing line behind it. I don't have a repair manual for this motor. I suspect the control board motor is bad, the battery is full charged. Any help would be appreciated. anyone know where parts are available? thank you

Re: minn kota powerdrive

There are two types of drives, one with two wires and one with 4 wires, the two wire unit is variable speed while the 4 wire units and three speed units, I am not sure if they have relays in them, I click you probably heard is the switch engaging, if you had the motor apart, you may have compromised the integrity of the water seal. however, if you connect a two wire unit (red/black) wire directly to the battery, your motor will go full speed, then you know your control is screwed, if you have the 4 wire unit, then the black is your common and red is full, yellow is slow, blue is mid. try connecting the wires directly to a battery (black/red), polarity does not matter as it will either go forward or reverse, at least that way you will know if the motor is good.
hope this helps..

Re: minn kota powerdrive

On the powerdrive units there are two motors: one to steer and one to turn the prop. Again, which one is not running?

On all power drive units the prop motor is continuously variable. It is varied by modulating pulse duration to it with a silicon controlled rectifier. The "width" of the pulses is varied by the sliding "speed control". That is what MK calls the "maximizer". There are two wires to that motor.

In some (early) controllers there are no "constant on" and "on" switches to activate the maximizer circuitry. The speed control goes from zero (off) to ten (full speed).

In later controllers you can set the speed control and leave it, then use the "momentary on" or "constant on" switches to turn the maximizer on and off.

That is why I asked which model you have.

The steering motor is bidirectional, single speed and also controlled by silicon rectifiers in response to the switches under the foot pedal. It will have three wires.

If you have a recent model it might be less expensive to convert it to Co-Pilot control than to replace the foot controller.

Re: minn kota powerdrive

The same with me. I have a 50lb Minn Kota Powerdrive w/ Mon/Con button. The relay is clicking, and the prop motor does not turn. Any ideas?

Re: minn kota powerdrive

The PD controller is not protected very well from water intrusion. I always stow mine in a hatch overnight if the boat is uncovered.

Well I bypassed the relay block and the prop turns fine. Does that that mean I need to replace the whole black relay block? And where do you get it?

I ordered the relay block from Minn Kota. I will not be down but just a week. I'll tell ya though. There is not much protection covering that block.

I had the same problem with my PD40. The foot switch needed a cleaning, and took about five minutes!

Check the "right" steer switch on the foot controller.

Re: minn kota powerdrive

The contacts are rusted underneath the plastic coating beyond repair. I heard somebody say it's cheaper to upgrade to the Copilot, than buy a new foot control. Does anybody know about that?

You can periodically find the foot controls on e-bay. Seems to me the corded co-pilot is about $100 and the wireless version is $199.

I have gone through about 4 foot pedals on my 65pd. finally in disgust bought a co pilot unit and have never looked back. simply the best thing i have ever purchased for my boat. no more pedal on the deck space, about 90 seconds to install....a wonderful device.

Re: minn kota powerdrive

Hmmmm. Now the Momentary on my PowerDrive footcontrol does not work. It's about 2 years old or less, and it's my second one. The control board is clean as a whistle, and looks fine. I have to use the slider to manual turn it on and off now. Minn Kota PowerDrives are the worst trolling motors ever made.
