I have the V-2 on a 15 ft aluminum bass boat. I think it works well, but get the removable mounting plate for it. I have sent you a private message.

Re: Minn Kota V2 powerdrive

My daughter's new to her 1999 14 foot Monark Aluminum came with that exact Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 model.
We will have it registered on Monday so as soon as I test drive it I'll report back.

It looks sweet. It even has a battery gauge built into the face plate.
It's only 2 years old and I just ordered the $39 quick release plate off iBoats last night. I don't want her to leave it on the boat when she not using it.

It's the 40 lb model (I thought it was a 50).

I use a 36 lb Minn Kota transom on my 14 foot aluminum and it's exactly as you say it's a pain in the @ss to keep steering it especially if there is a breeze.

The bow mounts are the only way to go because you are pulling the boat through the water instead of pushing it and having the smaller bow shape get pushed easily by the wind.

Another poster in another thread suggested to get the wireless transmitter that clips onto your rod thus eliminating the foot pedal too. He says to keep the foot pedal on board though for when the transmitter battery goes dead.

They run about $150 so I'd get the V2 first and add a transmitter later on if cash is an issue. You might be able to pick up a used transmitter on Ebay if I don't see it first :D

You don't just add a transmitter to get the wireless feature. You remove the side panel and add the electronics that makes it all work. The fob or wireless foot pedal are just half the system.

I have a minn kota powerdrive V2 and i love it. easy to deploy and retrieve. It is very powerful too. I have a 55 lb thrust on a 19 foot fiberglass deckboat and i have never been overpowered by current or wind. It comes with the long cable on the foot control so you would be able to use it from the back

If you are planning on getting the removable bracket and wireless key fob, look at the MG wireless series. The wireless comes with removable mount and wireless foot pedal, but has a promotional offer to get the key fob. It will probably be a lower cost than buying the V2 and adding the accessories.

Thx for correcting me :). I over simplified it. I don't have one yet and didn't know the specifics. I figured for $150 it was more involved, but I was trying to get the point across that you don't need to be tied to a foot pedal.

I've used foot pedal driven trollers and that gets old fast using the foot control to steer.

Using the key fob you now have one hand tied up running the motor. I like to have both hands available for fishing. Since all your foot is doing is going along for the ride why not use it to steer. :)

So the 40 should tow my little boat around with no problem and that is what got me started looking at that motor was that I could drive from the back how mutch room on the front do i need to mount it if you like i will take pics of what i have and maybe we can figure a way to mount it thanks to all

True if I wanted to drive with my hand I would keep what I have was thinking the wireless footcontrol would be one less thing in the boat to trip over or get tangled in thanks

I'm on the water now but I was planning to stop by her boat on the way home as I need to record the Merc's 25hp numbers so I can order maintenance parts.

I'll snap a pic of the mount.

And by the way . . . Welcome to iBoats :)

The MG Wireless comes with a wireless foot control, if that is what you prefer. You could put the keyfob on your belt, such that if you walked around the boat to handle a big fish, the control goes with you. I forget how many devices can be registered to control one motor but it is around 6-10, which is more than anyone needs. I have two keyfobs and foot control. The guy in the front and back can take control at any time. Most of the time my foot control is in the storage box, just for a spare.

I have 13 rods ranging from Musky to walleye, to bass, to ultra light and this feature simply does not interest me. Change rods, change lures, and oh yes, find the clip on fob and swap it as well. No thanks it's just not for me.

And by the way, the question you asked about the mounting position of a bow mount was a good one because I've always used a transom unit and I always wondered if I went up to a bow mount unit with my other boat how would it be mounted. I never wanted to give up the front deck space.

The boats I've used which had the foot controlled bow mount were not mine, so I never really concentrated on how they were mounted exactly.

But after I use the one below on my daughter's rig, I'll probably be hooked.

Below I posted the mounting pics you asked for. I'm glad I took them because I think I was steered into ordering the wrong bracket for my situation. No ones fault. But I need to use it with a trailerable cover that came with the boat but the previous owner never used it because it didn't fit over the bow mounted troller so he kept it garaged (even better :D)

It looks to Me that overhang is going to force me to bring the cover to my canvas guy and he will have to alter it to fit over the overhang of the bottom part of the bracket I just ordered that is left on the boat after I remove the motor.

I will have to weigh out how much he will charge to alter the cover to fit against getting the other Minn Kota bracket that just leaves a puck on the deck. See picture. See how only the small square composite puck is left on the deck:

Others have said the bracket I ordered is better because it's all aluminum but I'm not worried about a thief stealing the puck when the motors not on the boat. I'm sure for $70 plus the other bracket is strong too.

Thanks that helps alot what I was looking at is the quick release mount should not stick out that far as I don't think it has anything to do with the u shaped part that the motor rides in when deployed I think I might get it I found it at cabelas for 394.00 with free shipping and a 20 gift card and I can get the quick mount for another 40 I will just have to put a small deck accross the bow of my boat like your daughters and I will be all set thanks again will post pics when the work is done and I am looking forward to that report after you test the boat tom although unless you say you threw it off the boat becouse it is a piece of junk I think my mind is made up
