I have recently acquired a Minn Kota 40M trolling motor. Minn Kota tells me this motor was made in either late 1980 or early 1990. It has 5 wires (3 black, a red one, and a white one) on the power cable. I have managed through trial and error to get the motor to run. I think part of the function of all these wires is so the the motor can be run at 12 or 24 volts. But I am not sure of how to hook these wires up correctly. There seem to be more wires than necessary. I would appreciate information on how to correctly connect these wires.

I noted that 74 persons have viewed this posting but no reply's. Is this question that difficult or is that no one out there owns or has ever used a motor with this type of power cable?

Re: MinnKota 40M Power Cable

You acquired a motor that someone has probably mucked with so how would anyone would know about what you have? There should be a label indicating a model and serial number. Since we have none of that info it is impossible to research it. Since you talked to Minnkota and they indicated the motor was built in the late 1980 or early 1990 period, you could have gotten a little more detailed information from them since they built the thing? But here is one thing you can do. Look at the foot pedal -- and look at it carefully. If this motor was designed for 12 or 24 volt operation there would be a switch that makes that selection on the pedal and there would be either three or four wires in the power harness. If not, it is likely a 12 volt motor as most 40# thrust motors are and there would be two wires (one red and one black) in the power harness. How about posting some pictures where all of these wires come from. Does the wiring look original or does it look butchered? Help us help you. Lastly, I'm not sure Minnkota actually made a dual voltage motor in that time period. MotorGuide made a bunch of them however so make sure you have the Manufacturer correct. Either way, there would be no need for five wires in the power harness.

sounds like you have half a trolling motor. If its a tiller it sounds like you are missing the speed controller and if its a foot pedal it sounds like the pedal has been removed. It sounds like half a foot pedal model as that has 5 wires, One power, three windings and a small wire for the light bulb.
