I don't have my new MinnKota trolling motor yet with the ipilot, but before it arrives, i was wondering... Can I record a track by using my main boat motor? Pull the trolling motor out of the water, hit the record button, zoom the path i want to track using my large motor, and then stop recording. Stop, Then turn the MinnKota Loose and follow the path I just zoomed over? Or Does the Kota have to be in the water (and being used) to record a track a path? Any info would be helpful. thanks in advance.

Re: MinnKota iPilot Record-A-Track question.

Short answer: YES you can use your main motor, as described.

Slightly longer answer: Been there, tried that, exactly. Works GREAT!:joyous:

Word of caution: It loses GPS traking under low wide bridges and goes WILD. Be carefull.

Parting comment: I LOVE mine.

The i-pilot will be shut off when you pull it up and latch it in place, so I think you need to leave it down for it to record a track. This is how I do it on mine.

Are you sure about that? I'm NOT (so not trying to argue). As long as it's plugged in it will suck battery power trying to run the electroonics. I don't recall if mine was down or up, but I know it wasn't POWERING me along. I do know I motored my way there and trolled my way back (I wasn't going fast). Maybe I was 'dumb lucky". Now I have to go try recording another leg. Sorry if I mislead anyone.

BTW - what do you think of the 'anchor' function. I like watching it work.:D

Re: MinnKota iPilot Record-A-Track question.

Being down it will be turned on and record even if the motor isn't pulling you along. In the directions it says it shuts off automatically when in the stored position, and the green light is off when up.

From the manual, so it depends on which model you have.

Power
The i-Pilot controller will turn on whenever the trolling motor has power. for
Terrova and Riptide sT motors this is when the green system ready light is on.
for Powerdrive V2 and Riptide sP motors this is whenever the motor is
connected to power.
* For this reason it is very important to disconnect a PowerDrive V2 or Riptide
SP motor from power when not in use or battery drain will occur.

I had my boat out the other day and I run a i-track 2-miles long and used the outboard motor with the Terrova trolling motor stowed but the trolling motor was plugged in and the power to the trolling motor was on with the green light showing. I was travelling approx. 6-mph when laying the i-track. Not sure how fast you can go and still lay a i-track. After that I deployed the trolling motor and followed the i-track using the trolling motor it seems fairly accurate. The other way you can lay a i-track with the outboard motor is deploy your trolling motor plugged in and power on green light showing but keep the prop above the water a foot or so and lay the i-track. This way it is suppose to be more accurate. Making the i-tracks these ways you can lay the i-tracks faster and save your trolling motor battery for longer fishing day on the water.
