1984 Evinrude 50 hp - Was cruising along and all of a sudden the engine cut out. Trolling motor got me back to the landing, got it home pulled the plugs and noticed one of the plugs had a little damage. Split the block and sure enough a broken skirt on the piston got sucked into the combustion chamber and must have dinged the electrode causing my motor to stall.

Inspected the piston noticed that the rings were shot, piston is trashed. But the cylinder walls show very minor scoring.

What would happen if I just ignored the scoring and dropped a new piston with rings in it?? Anything major besides minor loss of compression?? Would it cause any damage to the new rings??

Re: Minor Scoring in Cylinder Wall

If at the least, grab a cylinder hone/ball hone and run it in and out a couple of times to get the x-hatching. This will at least get your rings to seat. If you do not then the rings will never seat tot he cylinders.

Also if you have a some decent scoring, then get a stone hone and then run that in and out a couple of times. Then the ball hone. You will be good. With this.

Al depends one what you are looking for. Your question can be answered many different ways. My response is just my opinion with the variables you supplied. Not saying it the perfect answer. But with the infor you supplied and without detailing what outcome you are expecting, you should be ok with my suggestion. It will run and be a decent motor until the next time is decides to take a dump....
