I am looking at purchasing another classic boat it is a 1972 Starcraft open bow.The information i gather from the boat is that it was stored in a garage since new for 40 years unused. It was then purchased or given (don't know i'm guessing on this) to the current owner in 2012 and it is now being sold. This boat is in mint condition from the pics i have seen and is advertised as such. The current owner has put this boat on the water this year and used it during the 2013 boating season.

Is there anything in particular i should be looking for while inspecting the boat just based on age but with no use ?

Would there be any issues with the rivets/construction from just sitting dry for 40 years or is that something that will only be affected with usage ?

If you were purchasing a boat like this would you expect it to function as a new boat or an old classic boat that would still have its own querks to it ?

TIA

All boats have their quirks. The wiring will be suspect and maybe the deck and transom I just dont know how the wood will of aged.

i think the big concern would be how many critters have taken up residence over the years and what they have remodeled on their own.

if it was really in a garage it should be good and dry.

Wiring needs to be inspected.
All other concerns would be with the motor, not the boat.

Re: Mint 72 Starcraft

Thanks for the input I know its still a old boat so buyer beware but it is nice to find a old one that shouldn't need to much.
So i will check all the wiring/harness/rubber/deck/transom,run it on the water and check the compression

Here's a pic the exact model isn't listed but i'm guessing its a Super Sport ?

Looks like it just came out of the factory, 16SS in avocado green. You will want to check the wiring under the hood on the Merc as it tends to dry rot and the insulation on the wires just crumbles. Real nice boat.

Nice boat........my only concerns would be the motor having dry rotted wires, old impeller, and ALL the rubber lines (to include the fuel pump diaphragm) need to be replaced to be able to handle the new E-10 fuel. I would probably check the trailer tires too.

Good luck with the purchase.

BTW the rivets will be fine. Yes it is a SS hull design sold under many names and variations.

My SC was a mothball special. That involved parking her in the backyard. Needless to say, all the things Bob_VT said are true. That is one nice looking SS. The hula girl on the dash seals the deal. :joyous: What part of the country are you in, Herman? Good luck, we'll keep the light on for you.

EDIT - I thought she looked familiar. That SS has been on CL for close to a year. I was wondering why the trees are bare in the pics. Heads up, the pics are not current. Have you seen her in-person? For his bottom price, she better be darn near perfect and not needing any of the age related repairs. IMHO.
