I inherited a '62 johnson seahorse, never been in the water. It was kept in storage until 3 yrs ago then I inherited it as a gift. It still has the original paint on the prop. The father of my Pastor in my church bought it in 1962 which shortly died after purchasing it. His wife kept it in her garage till she past away in '89. My pastor inherited it and kept it in his garage till 3 years ago and gave the boat and motor to me. Termites ate up the wooden hull boat just leaving the motor and trailer sustained. I don't have any paperwork with it, and it doesn't tell on the motor any numbers that i can find in order to tell what size it is. Maybe some one could give me some insight on it and how do i tell more about the motor. Thanks, Sam

You should be able to find a small metal plate on the transom bracket which will have the model number and serial number on it. That would be your starting point to figure out what motor you have.

If that ID plate is missing, you could look at the plugs on the power head, which should have a serial number stamped on it. Some people have had luck identifying motors based on the serial number.

Lastly, I would suggest if both of those fail, take some pictures and post here on iBoats. Chances are somebody could ID the motor based on some physical characteristic.

Good luck

You're a lucky guy! If you want to see the original 1962 Johnson brochure...you can go here:

http://www.old-omc.de/start.html

That site has PDF's of most the years' brochures. You can visually identify your motor. Click on "The 60"s"...then 1962...then Johnson Brochures.

It's a fascinating resource.

Please post a picture here as soon as you can....We'll walk you through whatever you want to do with your newly acquired find. That motor is new enough to be reliable (in a 60's kind of way) so you could opt to get a boat and use it...or you could just keep it as a "museum piece" of sorts....

There are a lot of people restoring the old stuff...but an original like yours is the most sought after simply because they are so unusual to find.
