This question pertains to problems I am having with a 1988 200hp 2.4L black max.

So I thought I was in for a carb cleaning when I started getting a rough idle. My compression is 125+ across the board. When I pulled the carbs, I found these jets missing on the #1 and #3 carb

So is it possible for the jets to have fallen out, been sucked up and spit out, and caused no problems? Or do I need to starting taking off the reeds and heads looking for these things?

Oddly enough, it wasn't running that bad!!!!

Thanks for your time!

On the 200, with WH46 or WH49 carbs, bowl vent size is listed as (none).
Main jet sizes vary also, be sure you put them back into the same holes.

Odds are good it's all spot on.

hope it helps

So you're telling me that in those 2 holes there's only supposed to be one jet? Why does the #2 carb have 2 jets then? Am I missing something?

I'm not being a smart arse.. but what you're missing is a Merc Shop Manual. The correct jetting and location of jets will be listed in that. Seloc or Clymer won't have the info and if they do it will likely be wrong.

I've got a jetting chart but it doesn't cover your carbs.

This is normal and nothing to panic about, these are back draft jets and left out at factory. The missing jets feed cylinders # 2 & 5 of engine, just make sure you reinstall high speeds in correct location as looking at intake left side feeds right bank and vise versa.

The missing jet is the bowl vent jet. In some normal setups, your's included, it is completely missing. It is also normal in some setups for the main jet size to be different from cylinder to cylinder.

There's other differences, also. To understand the above information, you need to know if your engine has vertical reeds or horizontal reeds in it. On a vertical reed engine, a carb venturi services the cylinder directly behind it. On a horizontal reed engine, it services the cylinder on the other bank.

That also changes bleed hose routing.

Failure in any engine tune up item is inimical to the longevity of your engine.

Like Sschefer says, you need the right manual BEFORE you make a mistake.

hope it helps
