Missing telltale plug on Ocean runner V4

I saw a guy running a mid-late 90s 115HP Oceanrunner (60*) without the flush plug. There was all kinds of water coming out. I had thought that needed to be in place except when flushing with a garden hose. My V6 motor of the same type has a plug suitable for a quick connect hose fitting, and a small hole in the side for the telltale.

Wouldn't that motor overheat?

Please advise

Sometimes, but not always, the motor will overheat due to the loss of water pressure from the missing water indicator plug.

That certainly makes sense. Of course the ocean was about 54*F, and the bay was 44*F, so likely no overheat for now.

Chris,

You think he knew it was missing and decided to run anyway, or was he oblivious to the problem? Just wondering.

Not sure how it came to be. It might have fallen out, or more likely the owner or previous owner forgot about it.

Knowing the mental and mechanical state of the average OB user, Johnny should have installed the "Quick connect" version of the flush plug as std equipment.
