Is it possible to build up a broken tooth on a flywheel? Has anyone tried this?

Thanks

Yes, pretty easy for someone skilled with a TIG welder. Also possible but harder with MIG welder.

Thanks for the quick response pnwboat. Good news!

Will the flywheel need to be removed?

Re: Missing tooth on flywheel

It would depend on the skill of the welder, but it would be easier if the flywheel was removed. That way the the flywheel can be positioned on edge with the missing tooth facing upwards. Easier to build up the tooth that way. A little patience, water to keep the flywheel cool, a die grinder and a file and you're back in business. Just don't get the fly wheel too hot in that area so the you don't unglue any of the magnets. Even if one does come off, easy enough to epoxy back on.

You should post the kind of motor/HP when posting.
I was gonna offer a flywheel, then got to thinking???
He's doesn't have the same motor as my stuff.
I checked and my wheels won't fit.
Maybe one of the others will have it.

New is $475

Re: Missing tooth on flywheel

Dose anyone know the type of bolts that fit the three holes in the flywheel? 1998 75 hp Force.

The puller set I have does not have the correct bolts and I need to buy some.

Thanks

I think they are 1/4-20.SAE.
Get hardened bolts.
Clean the threads before you install the puller.
Turn them in till they bottom out and back out 1/4 turn.
If they break it will be easier to back them out.

I've broken a few bolts on the puller.
You might have to drill and tap a bigger size hole???

Re: Missing tooth on flywheel

I managed to get the flywheel off. The hardest part was working out how to hold the flywheel still. I used a piece of reinforcing rod threaded through the bolts on the puller.

I have to say that I was a bit nervous about what would happen when the flywheel finally let loose. I was not sure whether it would fly up into the air or if the threads would strip on the bolt holes. It popped when I was retightening the puller and I jumped higher than the flywheel. Everything looked like new under the flywheel. I’m having the teeth built up at the moment.

For reference the bolts needed for a 1998 75hp Force were M8 x 75 mm in length. They must have switched over to metric when Mercury started building the motors. They are closer to 5/16th size so less likely to strip out of the flywheel than ? inch.

The manual I have says the flywheel nut needs to be 125 ft/lbs. Does anyone have a different value? Do I need to use any thread locker on this nut?

I’ll post how the repaired teeth turns out.

Thanks everyone for the help.
