i'm feeling adventurous. theres been a new pedestrian walkway being constructed between omaha ne. and council bluffs ia. the last couple of years. the local newspaper says it's done now. it is gonna be dedicated this sat. eve. it will be called the bob kerry walkway i believe.....

i'm thinking of doing a river run, at night. camping on the river overnight too. my question is...... anything special i need to be aware of for running the river at night? i've been camping at the lake several times this year. camping on the beach at the lake. but the river. much more dangerous i think..

my plan is to find where i want to camp during the day. waypoint it on the gps. then go up to anchor somewhere close to the new bridge so i can see the show. when i return to where i want to camp at. it will be dark by then. i have a gps and will use this. i have a spot light. i understand to stay to the outside of the bends on the river as it's deepest and to avoid the inside as it may be shallow. i don't have a depth finder. guess my biggest concern will be river debris. hoping the gf can run the spot light periodically in ft. of the boat to hopefully see any. which there could be some as the forecast is rain up till sat. rain tends to raise the river level and pick up debris on the beach and float it.... i usually use the day marks for general guidance when on the river, but i'm guessing i won't be able to pick them out on the shorline in the trees.

i also plan on sleeping on my boat. it has worked well on the lake. so far, i've just pulled up on the beach and tied to a tree. straight in. i've seen a few cruisers on the river that have been parked parallel with the river, not pulled straight in. is there a benefit to this? like perhaps being able to rise and fall with the river? if i pull in straight i will use a stick to mark the river level. but by the time i wake, it could be to late if the river falls to much. once in the past i was near hosed by this. almost didn't make it out of where i'd parked at.

so any suggestions would be welcome. this will be the first time i run the river at night.

not sure about your area. I won't boat the Missouri here in the daytime though.

being very close to where it dumps into the Mississippi the current is fierce and a lot of barge traffic. I think up in your area it is more sedate.

You wont have any problems.I fish out there at night all the time. When I fish I head out in the evening and run as far upriver as I want to fish and fish my way back.It is easier since you don't have to plane out the boat going down.Just kick it in gear.Find a spot downstream to camp.A spotlight is a must and good bugspray.
As far finding a spot to beach most boats you see pull straight in but the current moves them around.I would rather tie up behind a rock dike to a piling because the water is much deeper.Good luck.

yep, i think that's the case. much more sedate + i think i read that there's no more barges schedualed to be on the river up this way the rest of the year. not like there's a lot anyways.

thanks husker100. i am hoping to camp down river from the bridge if i can find a spot. good point in that ya can just idle down. going up i pretty much need to get up near plane to make headway. and yep, i plan on using the spot light much.... i like behind the wing dykes too. for the depth and the lack of current. them dikes are pretty wierd though. i've been caught in current behind them that runs north (the wrong way) and can take ya right towards the rocks,..... i won't forget the bugspray either, thanks.....

Getting some rain up North.I hope it doesn't get too trashy for you.Lots of times you can see better without the spotlight.Just see what works for you.River is coming up a little but still clean as we speak.Have a good time and stay dry.

yeah, i'm hip. i've been on the river a day or two after it rains up north. man, was all me and gf could do, the two of us on lookout, to see the debris. was awefull dodging it. think that was the time i broke my waletale off my last speedboat. along with my vent plate.... that'll teach ya not to use a hydrofoil.

i'm hip. gonna be a darn near full moon too. if the clouds aren't out. should be able to see pretty good. still gonna have the spotlight ready though.

kinda good. better for depth, worse for debris and less camp spots to choose from. i get river levels from the us army corp of engineers. looks like the est. is for about 14.5'. up about a half foot from yesterdays est. ....
Have a good time and stay dry.
thankyou, and i will i hope. i got a better chance at the dry part than most. my aristocraft is a hardtop + i've got rear canvas for full encloser.....;)
