whats the best oil & mix for an old johnson 1967-1975 ? I been useing sae.30 1qt.-6gal somkes alittle but don't foul the plugs

Am I to understand you've been mixing 1 qt. motor oil to six gallons of gas?<br /><br />If so I'm going to have to follow this thread! <br /><br />LubeDude, waiting on you !!!

You should be using a TC-W3 rated outboard oil mixed at 50:1.<br />( 16 oz per 6 gallon ) ( 2.6oz per gallon)<br /><br />You can get it for $2 a qt if you shop around. The synthetic version runs $20 per gallon.<br /><br />Switching to TC-W3 oil will pollute less and allow the oil to burn properly, as it is designed to burn at low temps.<br /><br />The 24: 1 ratio and 30w oil you have been using is for pre 1964 motors.<br /><br />If you want to feel better, you can use it at 40:1 ratio, but switch to the TC-W3 oil.<br /><br />Some reading for you:<br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000007

Used to have a '57 35hp. It called for 1 1/2 qt per 6 gallon. I ran it with 30W bulk. Ran great but left a trail wherever I went.

Yes, the factory manual for my '70 evinrude calls for 30 weight oil mixed. I'm pretty sure it was at a ~50:1 mix though. (1 pint / 6 U.S. gallons). <br /><br />BUT... there's no reason why you should mix with SAE 30 weight these days! Use your favorite 2-cycle oil for water cooled engines (TC-W3 rated) at 50:1. I think "we've come a long way baby" when it comes to oil for 2 strokes. It will be better for the engine, and smoke less too.<br /><br />that's my $.02<br /><br />Brent<br /><br />---Edit---<br />-should've known others would post by the time I got mine typed in!!
