Mixing Oil Brands (TCW3)

Is there any problem with mixing different brands of 2 cycle oil as long as it is all TCW3 labelled?<br /><br />Charles

I would think not. After all, how many times do you think someone fuels up on one side of the lake, and buys whatever oil's sold there, next day goes to the other side of the lake.......

I don't like to do it, myself. I've heard stories of different brands of oil being mixed and gelling. Don't know how true they are since it didn't happen to anyone I actually knew. I figure why take the chance unless it's a must do situation.

Very Interesting.<br />Two replies, two somewhat differing opinions.<br />Having earlier done a search of both this board and the "Outboard Motors" site, that was about the same information I found there.<br />Evidently works for most, but there may have been a few problems, too. The reference to problems almost all seem to be "heard about" things, rather than actual first hand experiences. Considering the possible consequences, I think I will stay with one TCW3 oil and not worry about it.<br /><br />Charles

diff oils have diff flashpoints mixing them is not recommened since the mixed oils would have a diff flashpoint and may burn a piston just my thought

One of the requirements for TC-W3 certification is the the oil mix with all other approved oils. The old TC-W2 lubes were the ones that gelled up.

(The "old" guys who visit here will know what I am talking about.)<br /><br />To answer your question I think you are probably OK to mix type III oils. First off. I just bought another gallon of Evinrude oil. <br />When I bought this boat and motor the oil tank was about 1/2 full. I bought a gallon of Evinrude oil and topped it off. In the meantime I was given several pints of 2 cycle oil by a friend. All TC-W3. Kendall GT-1, Pennzoil. Being a rather frugal person, I used that oil to top off the oil tank as needed. Also, not wanting a bunch of extra cans around, I poured some of them into the partial jug of OMC oil. Now, I may or may not have contaminated both my oil tank oil and my extra jug of oil. Rather than take any chances, I decided to give away my possibly contaminated jug, (with appropriate warning), siphon as much out of my oil tank as I can and start over with my fresh, pure, OMC/Evinrude gallon.<br />If there was going to be a gelling problem, which I understand is unlikely with TC-W3 oils, would it show up right away?<br />Had I not read about a possible problem, I would not have given it another thought.<br />Two problems I have, read too much, think too much in the shower.<br /><br />Charles

Well, you didn't hurt nuttin.... <br /><br />I too was gonna use the Evinrude oil, till I saw the price. Almost triple than that of West Marine's TC-W3.<br /><br />Some people will swear to use the "manufacturer's recomended......."<br /><br />Engine should be happy now!
