I am in the process of preparing to mix thixotropic powder with poly resin to create filler for various voids prior to installing fiberglass woven cloth.
Additionally, later on I will be mixing the powder with gel coat to create a stuco type finish for the floor.

Does anyone have any tips for mixing the powder into either prior to or after adding the hardner into the poly resin or gel coat?

Thanks,
Jim

Its possible to do it either way, but adding catalyst after making the putty is the normal way.

The problem with adding the catalyst first, is you only have a short period of time to use it after putting it in, so you may run out of time before getting it applied.

That makes perfect sense, and is in line with what I was thinking. Thanks for your time.

I worry about getting the catalyst properly mixed in to the resin so I mix it in first, before adding thickeners. It seems to work well for me. I use small batches of putty so I have never had a problem with it gelling too soon.

BTW- I use plastic bags to apply the putty. Cut out a corner of the bag and squeeze. Saved my life once. ;)

I like the bag idea, nice one.

Ok, I'll bite.

How?

Ok, you've hooked me.
S'plain about the plastic bag. Are you referring to something as simple as a zip-loc bag, or something more robust.
Sounds like applying pastry.
Thanks,.

I was kidding about the life saving part..thought it was funny.
Yes, I am talking about a simple sandwich bag. The larger freezer bags are better though. They are a little thicker and will hold more putty. Just cut the corner to make an opening the size of the bead you want. It really helps get the thickened resin into corners. Then you can spread it as needed.

I did that when I drilled holes in my transom...in the wrong location.
Just fill a baggie and shoot it right in the holes til it comes out the other side.

That bag idea is great, wish I had used one this weekend when I filled my holes, would have been a lot cleaner...
