1973 model 200; 20hp serial # 3540395

I have been looking around for info on what parts I will need to change/add to allow this motor to charge a battery.

I am trying to install electric start and can figure out the starter; relay; switch things by myself.
I just do not understand what parts I have or need for charging.
I realize I have a stator already but do not know if it needs to be changed out for a differant one.
I assume but do not know I will need to add a rectifier and maybe even a voltage regulator.

Can someone explain the wiring and parts for this motor in detail to me. A diagram would be great showing the parts.

Thanks
John

There is no room under the flywheel for a alternator on that model.

Ok a alternator will not fit under the flywheel so I assume you mean charging a battery is not a option.

So can you explain to me the differant stators; the fact that a lighting stator was available; the reason a rectifier and voltage regulator is listed for these motors. I thought all these parts were used for charging but I really do not know.
It seems to me if electric start was a option; my pull cord housing and block has a space to mount a starter that charging a battery would be posiable.

Re: Model 200 (20hp) electric

Thank you for putting that into differant words so I can now understand your point.

By looking at the diagrams I can see I have a group 14 because it list the correct switch box for my motor.
From the parts diagram I can see a group 14 was not available in elect start and everything under the flywheel is differant than a group 15 which was available in manual or electric start.
Changing everything including the flywheel to a group 15 would be hard enough with so many parts NLA it would also be cost prohivative.

That is what I needed to know.

So one final question. My pull rope housing has a space to mount a starter. My flywheel has a ring gear. If I can find a starter in a NOS bin somewhere or find a used one do you think I can get it to work on this motor????????

Thanks for your help
John.

If you can find a starter it will give you may starts on one charge up here in the sticks we get away with a single charge for all summer

I have the same o/b. Merc 200 1973 electric start. My starter motor is mounted in the rap around area below the switch box on a bracket. According to Seloc manual there are 2 starter motors you need the smaller one of the two types. the larger ones are for 35-45hp.

That is a good possibility. I acquried a 35 this season and it has a bad charging stator. I found one, but have not installed it yet. Anyway, I would charge the battery about once a month. I used the boat every other day, twice on Saturday and three times on Sunday!
I took the pull rope off my 50 as backup which came in handy twice.
