Model# breakdown: 85ESL74B

What does the model# mean?
85= HP
ES=???
L= Long Shaft
74= Model Year
S= ???

As its a 74 im assuming now that the "ES" does NOT mean "Electric Shift".
I've looked at some older and newer models and they are about the same, the ones that have electric shift say "ES" in them, an the ones that dont also have it.
Questions is: What does "ES" stand for in model year 74?

Well, I have a 1972 Johnson ESL 50 hp. and mine is a hydro electric shift. Check under the hood and look to see if you have a blue and a green wire going down to the lower unit it should be at the base of the engine. Then you'll know.

Not sure, but my advice is don't spend a lot of time pondering over it. ALL 1974 85hp Johnsons were ESL, so it doesn't really matter. There were no electric shift motors in 1974, so it certainly doesn't mean that.

As for the trailing "S", that only means something if you are ordering parts and then only if the part you are ordering happend to have a mid-year change. The letter indicates the change IF there was one. Otherwise it is meaningless.
